The Rainbow Coalition appears set to play a significant role in the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) campaign efforts in Imo State, following the declaration by the PDP National Leader and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on the coalition’s political activities. The development was highlighted on Saturday during the inauguration of the Imo East Senatorial Campaign Council for the PDP candidate, Prince Eze Madumere, in Owerri.

Speaking at the event, PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, described the Rainbow Coalition as an organisation of people working together to achieve a common political objective. He said several political parties and individuals were already working with the coalition, even though their involvement may not always be publicly visible. Anyanwu also noted that none of the PDP candidates in Imo State was currently in court, adding that the party had been cautious about admitting new members in order to protect its structure.

The PDP National Secretary urged candidates and campaign council members to focus their campaigns on issues rather than attacking political opponents. According to him, candidates should go directly to the people, explain what they intend to do and embark on door-to-door campaigns. He stressed that money alone cannot solve the challenges facing the people, maintaining that human development should remain a major priority.

Anyanwu further declared that the PDP remains deeply rooted among the people of Imo State, describing what happened to the party in previous elections as an “aberration.” He charged members of the campaign council to put in their best efforts toward delivering the party’s candidates, while urging them to engage voters directly and communicate the party’s plans and programmes.

In his remarks, the PDP Imo East Senatorial candidate and former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, assured that his campaign would be anchored on issues affecting the people of Owerri Zone. He said the zone had embarked on an “ordained journey” towards the National Assembly, calling on party members and supporters to remain united and committed. Madumere said the zone was faced with challenges including deteriorating infrastructure, insecurity, displacement of farmers, youth unemployment and drug abuse, which he said required knowledgeable and firm legislative representation.

Madumere also expressed confidence that members and supporters of the PDP who had left the party for various reasons would return, as the campaign progresses. He called for collective action to address what he described as the “burning issues” confronting Imo East Senatorial District, stressing the need for representatives who would speak firmly and work toward addressing the concerns of the people.

The State Chairman of the PDP in Imo, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, expressed happiness over the inauguration of the campaign council and congratulated the candidates from Owerri Zone. He said the party had carefully selected its candidates and expressed confidence in their ability to prosecute the electioneering campaign across the senatorial district.
