The proposed amendment is reported to provide a legal framework for the appointment of Interim Management Committees (IMCs) to administer the councils following the expiration of the tenure of the current elected chairmen and councillors.

The development comes against the backdrop of the September 26, 2026 local government elections earlier announced by the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) for the 27 chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats across 4,758 polling units.

Ikoro Okigwe gathered that the Assembly amended the Local Government Law to allow for the appointment of an Interim Management Committee, with the arrangement potentially lasting for six(6) months or longer depending on when another council election is conducted, furthermore it is said that the existing council officials tenure is expected to expire on September 30.

During a recent seating, IMHA House Leader, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi disclosed that the amendment was intended to prevent a vacuum in the administration of the local government system. It also revealed that the proposed IMC arrangement would provide for representation from each electoral ward.
