Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma and the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, have commended Rear Admiral Michael Igwe for his commitment to community development following the commissioning of a newly constructed town hall and a 500KVA transformer at his hometown Umuokoro community Lowa, in Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of the State.
The projects, facilitated by the Nigerian Navy in honour of the senior naval officer, were inaugurated on Thursday by Governor Uzodimma, represented by the Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru.
Speaking at the event, the Governor described Rear Admiral Igwe as an illustrious son of Imo State whose distinguished service to the nation has continued to attract meaningful development to his community. He noted that the town hall and transformer would strengthen community engagement, improve electricity supply, and stimulate socio-economic growth in the area.
The Governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support for the Armed Forces and praised the Nigerian Navy, under the leadership of Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, for complementing its security mandate with impactful community development initiatives.
Representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, the Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation, Rear Admiral Chijioke Onyemaobi, said the intervention reflects the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to strengthening civil-military relations and improving the welfare of communities across the country. He urged residents to safeguard the facilities for the benefit of future generations.
In his remarks, Rear Admiral Michael Kelechi Igwe expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Nigerian Navy for the honour, saying the projects demonstrate the Navy’s dedication to improving the living standards of Nigerians through meaningful community interventions.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Mr. Collins Nwachukwu thanked the Federal and Imo State Governments, as well as the Nigerian Navy, for restoring electricity to the area after years of blackout. He also appreciated the ongoing erosion control project in the community and appealed for the rehabilitation of rural roads.
Among dignitaries at the event were the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe; the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso; the Executive Chairman of Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Obioha Ndukwe; traditional rulers; religious leaders; and representatives of women and youth groups.
