… Hails NACOFED Retreat in Owerri

The Executive Chairman of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Mr. Justice Remigius Okoye, has commended the state government for hosting the 2026 retreat of the National Council of Finance and Economic Development (NACOFED) in Owerri.
Okoye described the retreat as a major opportunity for Imo State and the South-East, saying the presence of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, federal finance officials and other stakeholders would strengthen collaboration and promote economic development.
He attributed the improvement in Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to Governor Hope Uzodimma’s policies, strategic planning, digitalisation and efforts to improve security across the state.
According to him, improved security has enabled revenue officials to extend taxpayer sensitisation and awareness campaigns to communities across the state.

Okoye said that when Uzodimma assumed office, the state’s revenue profile was low, but had since improved significantly, while stressing that the government was still working to achieve more.
The IIRS chairman also highlighted the agency’s digital transformation, noting that taxpayers can now receive electronic assessments, make payments online and obtain receipts without necessarily visiting government offices.
He added that vehicle documentation and other revenue services had also been integrated into the digital system, making the processes faster, easier and more transparent.
Okoye explained that the system automatically tracks taxpayers, sends payment reminders and flags defaulting accounts for appropriate compliance action, thereby reducing dependence on manual processes.
He, however, acknowledged that Imo had yet to reach its desired revenue target, saying the IIRS would continue to expand the tax base, improve its systems and intensify taxpayer education.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Uzodimma for his efforts toward strengthening the state’s economy, improving security and creating an enabling environment for businesses and residents.
