THE SUSTAINED  MEDIA ATTACK ON IMO TIGER BASE:

MAY WE NOT THROW AWAY THE BABY WITH THE BATH WATER:

Deacon Chike Okafor, Ph.D

Democracy flourishes when public institutions are subjected to thoughtful scrutiny. The right of citizens to interrogate power, question state actors and ventilate legitimate anxieties is not merely a procedural feature of liberal governance,it is its animating soul. Our civic space must therefore remain receptive to concerns, especially those touching on human dignity and the conduct of security agencies.

The recent surge of commentary surrounding the Tiger Base Unit of the Imo State Police Command underscores this democratic energy. Allegations of overreach and professional impropriety are gravely important and should never be trivialized.

Any institution vested with the coercive instruments of the state must at all times, operate under the canopy of law, restraint, and respect for the sanctity of life.

Yet, a discerning mind must also resist the temptation of single-lens judgment.

Our dear State,Imo did not arrive at its present atmosphere of relative tranquillity through happenstance. We emerged from a turbulent and traumatic period in which violent non-state actors fractured civic order and rendered our communities ungovernable. Reversing that dangerous and deadly era required not only institutional resolve, but steady, courageous, and deliberate leadership at the highest levels.

In this regard, Governor Hope Uzodimma merits unequivocal commendation. His focus, calmness, courage, dexterity and his administration’s security architecture, co-ordinated across federal and state platforms, has restored stability to spaces once held hostage by fear.

The evidences are empirical: normalcy has returned to markets, religious centres thrive again, social life has revived, and investment-grade confidence was visibly affirmed during the recent Imo Economic Summit, which attracted global and domestic stakeholders. These outcomes are neither accidental nor illusory.

Against this backdrop, the attempt to personally indict the Governor for the alleged transgressions of a handful of operatives within the “Tiger Base” betrays more political intent than principled advocacy. It reflects a familiar pattern: weaponising isolated misconduct to undermine a leadership that has undeniably, stabilised the state. Such manoeuvres do not advance justice, they merely inflame sentiment and obscure the real work required to strengthen our institutions.

Nonetheless, acknowledging political motivations must not be mistaken for a defence of perceived wrong doing. Any officer who violates professional codes must be subjected to due process and held accountable without equivocation. The credibility of the state depends on this. Justice, transparent, fair, and unsparing is indispensable to public trust.

What the moment demands, therefore is not a reactionary and hurriedly dismantling of a security formation that has historically contributed to what we are now enjoying as a people;the pacification of our communities and the restoration of civic life, but a sober, principled recalibration.

We must neither canonize institutions nor demonize them wholesale.

The measured middle where reform is pursued without hysteria, and accountability is enforced without political coloration is where enduring solutions reside.

Imo cannot afford the nihilism of those who in the name of critique, and in the exercising of democratic rights of opposition would plunge the state back into the abyss from which we have only recently emerged. Neither can it embrace institutional impunity which the alleged excesses of some men and officers of the Tiger Base suggests,

Our obligation is to strike a balance that honours both the imperatives of security and the inviolability of human rights.

This is the equilibrium required by a mature democracy and expected by a discerning citizenry.

May we therefore not throw away the baby with the bath water, because i fear that is exactly what this sustained and orchestrated clamour, mostly by opposition elements for the outright disbandment of the “Tiger Base” is suggesting,

May Imo State Continue to Prevail.

Chijioke Obinna, AMLSN Imo Branch Chairman, Calls for Renewed Action on HIV Testing, Stigma Reduction, and Quality Care as World Marks AIDS Day 2025

As the world commemorates World AIDS Day 2025, the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Imo State Branch, has renewed its call for stronger HIV testing services, improved community engagement, and sustained investment in quality laboratory systems. This year’s theme, “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response,” highlights the need to rebuild HIV services affected by social and economic challenges.

Speaking in Owerri, the AMLSN Imo Branch Chairman and Quality Management System Expert, Chijioke Obinna, noted that disruptions in healthcare delivery have slowed progress in HIV prevention and treatment. He stressed that early diagnosis, reliable laboratory services, and continuous viral load monitoring remain critical to revitalizing the HIV response.

Obinna reaffirmed the central role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in combating HIV/AIDS, emphasizing their contributions in diagnosis, treatment monitoring, drug-resistance detection, and public health surveillance. He identified priority areas for Imo State, including expanding access to quality-assured HIV testing across all LGAs and improving viral load testing and early diagnosis.

He also underscored the importance of promoting ISO 15189–aligned laboratory quality systems, stating that accurate results rely on strong infrastructure, well-trained personnel, and continuous quality improvement. Obinna further called for intensified efforts to eliminate stigma, describing it as a major barrier preventing individuals from seeking care.

The AMLSN Chairman encouraged stronger collaboration with government agencies, NGOs, donors, and international partners to enhance HIV services in the state. He commended Medical Laboratory Scientists for their steadfast dedication to providing essential HIV diagnostic services despite systemic disruptions.

As Nigeria pushes toward eliminating AIDS as a public health threat, AMLSN Imo State urges residents to get tested, know their HIV status, support persons living with HIV, advocate for quality laboratory services, and stand firmly against stigma.

BREAKING NEWS: Tinubu Declares National Security Emergency, Orders Massive Recruitment and System Overhaul

blank

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a National Security Emergency, unveiling far-reaching measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s defence and internal security systems amid escalating cases of terrorism, kidnapping, and communal violence across the country.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the President authorised urgent additional recruitment across the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force, describing the current security situation as “unacceptable and requiring extraordinary action.”

The President approved a significant boost to police manpower, with the Nigerian Police Force set to recruit an extra 20,000 officers, bringing the total ongoing recruitment target to 50,000. To fast-track training, NYSC camps nationwide will be used as temporary police training depots.

Officers currently deployed for VIP protection are to undergo immediate retraining and be reassigned to critical security theatres across the country.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has also been instructed to deploy all trained forest guards and commence fresh recruitment to flush out terrorists and bandits hiding in forests across states.

President Tinubu commended security agencies for recent breakthroughs, including the rescue of 24 abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 worshippers in Kwara, assuring that operations continue to free all remaining hostages.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s support for local security initiatives, the President pledged full backing for state security outfits. He further urged the National Assembly to expedite amendments allowing states that are willing to establish state police.

He called on state governments to review boarding school locations, especially those in remote or high-risk areas, and advised religious centres to ensure consistent security arrangements.

The President restated his administration’s commitment to ending farmer–herder clashes through the newly created Ministry of Livestock, urging herders to embrace ranching, discontinue open grazing, and surrender illegal firearms.

President Tinubu paid tribute to security personnel who recently lost their lives, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba, and extended condolences to affected families in several states impacted by attacks.

He warned that the government’s restraint must not be mistaken for weakness, vowing decisive, coordinated, and sustained action against all criminal elements.

Owerri, November 13, 2025 – The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Her Excellency Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, PhD, has praised Governor Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma for his proactive efforts in protecting human rights in the state. She made the remarks on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Imo State, to her office at the Government House, Owerri.

Lady Ekomaru highlighted key initiatives by the Governor, including the abolition of harmful laws against widows, swift action against offenders—citing the recent Awo-Omamma incident—and the promotion of equal access to education, healthcare, and other state facilities. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of all Imo residents and expressed readiness to collaborate with the Commission on its advocacy efforts.

Success or Failure of 2027 elections in your hands, Uzodimma Charges Editors

blank
Governor Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has declared that the credibility or otherwise of the upcoming 2027 elections will largely depend on the role of editors.

blank

He said their reportage and opinion moulding before, during, and after the elections will determine how Nigerians appreciate its outcome.

Addressing the editors in Abuja on Wednesday at the start of their 2025 All Nigerian Editors Conference, Uzodimma declared “what you do between now and 2027 election will determine not only what Nigerians know about 2027, but how they experience it. You will have to choose whether to frame candidates as threats or alternatives.”

The governor who was the keynote Speaker at the event noted that as the mirror through which the society views matters, it was incumbent on editors to shape public opinion towards credible elections rather than feast on the perceived shortcomings.

He said they could achieve that by laying emphasis on national interest rather than bow to the pull of proprietary or commercial interests.

“National interest must be your editorial North star. National interest in an election year means coverage that informs without inflamming, that holds power accountable without treating every contest as a catastrophe, that allows citizens to make choices without making them believe that the process is irredeemably broken”, he submitted

Uzodimma, who spoke on the theme, 2027: EDITORS AS CATALYSTS OF DEMOCRACY, NATIONAL COHESION AND ELECTORAL INTEGRITY, insisted that editors must assume responsibility for this core aspect of elections instead of isolating themselves from it.

According to him, “editors often treat electoral integrity as someone’s else responsibility… INEC, the executive, security agencies and civil society organisations. But it is yours too because you shape the information environment in which citizens form opinions and reach judgments.”

The Imo State Governor challenged editors to rise above proprietary interest, commercial and political considerations, and other sundry distractions to ensure that their practice contributed to a credible election in 2027.

He cautioned them not to allow “rumours and tribalism to masquerade as journalism as that would compromise the electoral integrity even before a single vote was cast.

“If unverified claims about rigging circulate unchecked in your pages or on your platforms, you have undermined the process regardless of INEC’s competence”, Uzodimma argued.

He however called on them to ensure that they use their services to achieve national cohesion by avoiding divisive publications.

The governor who is the Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum, noted that because the public rely on the editors to assess the integrity of elections, they must have national cohesion in mind while helping to mould public opinion.

“Let 2027 be the election year where the Nigerian media became architects of a shared democratic future, where you demonstrated that journalism can be vigorous, engaging, commercially viable and work in the service of national cohesion”, Uzodimma concluded.

Britain’s Prince Andrew, the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth, will have his royal titles formally removed and will have to move out of his home in Windsor, Buckingham Palace said Thursday, Oct. 30.

This comes as the royal faces growing pressure over his ties to the later s£x offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement that King Charles had “initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours” of his younger brother.

“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor,” the palace said, an escalation from measures announced two weeks ago, when it said that Andrew would stop using some of his titles, including the Duke of York.

The palace said that the “censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him”.

“Their Majesties [King Charles and Queen Camilla] wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse,” the statement added.

The palace also said that a formal notice had been served for Andrew to leave his home at the Royal Lodge, close to Windsor Castle.

The palace said: “His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation.”

Andrew will move to a property on the royal family’s private Sandringham estate, and his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles, according to the Palace.

In a statement two weeks ago, Andrew cited “the continued accusations about me” that “distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.”

“As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me,” Andrew said.

Governor Uzodimma

Imo State Governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, has condemned the attempted reintroduction of a barbaric widowhood ritual in Awo-Omamma, Oru East Local Government Area, where a widow was reportedly forced to drink water used to wash her late husband’s corpse.

The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Nkechi Ugwu, ordered a full investigation into the incident and vowed that such inhuman and degrading practices would never be tolerated in the state.

According to reports, Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, widow of the late Odinakachi Ndubuisi, was accused by her in-laws of being responsible for her husband’s death and was locked inside an ambulance with the corpse until she agreed to drink the “corpse water” to prove her innocence.

The act was foiled following a swift intervention by Chief Ugwu, the Oru East Local Government Chairman, and security operatives, after women advocacy groups — including Onurube Coalition, Virgin Heart Foundation, and Harsco Global Media — raised an urgent alert.

Chief Ugwu confirmed that the ministry’s intervention ensured the widow’s rescue and that the perpetrators were arrested for prosecution.

The Federal Government has introduced a new digital system to track and verify all payments made into national accounts, marking a major milestone in public finance transparency.

The innovation, called the Federal Treasury Receipt (FTR), provides a unified, digitally verifiable proof of all payments to the government. It works alongside the Central Billing System (CBS) under the Revenue Optimisation and Assurance Platform (RevOp), which became operational on August 1, 2025.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the platform offers real-time visibility of funds across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), ensuring full automation of revenue sharing while minimizing leakages and human interference.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, described the reform as “a new era of transparency and accountability,” emphasizing that every kobo due to the government will now be traceable and reconciled digitally.

The system is currently in a 30-day pilot phase across ten agencies and will later be rolled out nationwide. It also sets the groundwork for the National Revenue Service (NRS), expected to take off in January 2026 to unify and modernize revenue collection in Nigeria.
