Dr. Sydney-Jack made the call during the 2026 International Women’s Day commemoration organized by YFFLN Powered by Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI),at the Imo State University, where she delivered a keynote address titled “Give to Gain: From Skills to Empowerment”, on Friday.

The event, held at the institution’s Mass Communication Department, brought together students, lecturers, gender advocates and development partners to discuss leadership development and empowerment for young women.

Speaking to the students, the YFFLN founder described the media as a powerful instrument capable of shaping national narratives and influencing societal change.

“Media is not just about microphones and cameras. Media is about power, the power to shape narratives, challenge injustice, and amplify voices that history has tried to silence,” she said.

According to the Ace broadcaster, when young women understand how to control narratives and communicate effectively, they position themselves to become leaders in society.

Dr. Sydney-Jack also highlighted the long history of excellence and resilience associated with women from Imo State and the Igbo community, citing notable figures such as Margaret Ekpo and Oby Ezekwesili who have made global impact through advocacy, leadership and public service.

She told the students that their greatest challenge is not global competition but overcoming fear and self-limitation.

“Your greatest competition is not the world. Your greatest competition is the version of yourself that is afraid to rise,” she said.

Explaining the objective of YFFLN, Dr. Sydney-Jack said the network was created to prepare young women for leadership through mentorship, skill development and civic engagement.

The Imo State Coordinator of the Young Female for Leadership Network (YFFLN), Amarachi Agupusi, was also present at the event and commended the initiative for creating a platform that encourages young women to develop leadership capacity and civic consciousness.

One of the resource persons at the programme, Nwakaego Ohaegbulam, a lecturer and media practitioner, also addressed the participants, urging them to combine academic knowledge with practical media skills in order to compete effectively in today’s dynamic communication landscape.

The 42nd Commissioner of Police in the state described women as builders of stable and peaceful homes, noting that their contributions remain vital whether their husbands are present or absent due to the demands of police service.

CP Bosso urged police officers’ wives to see themselves as strong pillars behind the successes and achievements of their husbands, who serve as heads of their respective families. He described the theme “Give to Gain” as a divine principle, emphasizing that giving to others often brings blessings and rewards from God.

The event featured several resource persons who delivered lectures on important topics affecting women and the girl child. Barrister Mrs. Amaka spoke on the rights of the girl child and the need for justice and action for all women and girls, while Dr. (Mrs.) Celestina Njoku highlighted the importance of educating the girl child.

Also speaking, SP Princess Joy Nnaji, the Secretary of Imo POWA, delivered a lecture on self-hygiene and economic empowerment. She outlined the critical roles mothers—especially police officers’ wives—must play in ensuring proper upbringing of their children for a better society.

Princess Nnaji stressed that the future of the girl child largely depends on mothers, urging women to maintain high standards of personal and family hygiene for healthier homes and communities.

She also described the POWA Chairperson, Hajia Maryam Abdullahi Bosso, as a role model who has consistently encouraged officers’ wives to maintain healthy homes and responsible family life.

In her remarks, the POWA Chairperson, Hajia Maryam Bosso, thanked leaders and members of the association for organizing the International Women’s Day celebration. She noted that the event was designed to support and encourage the less privileged, especially during challenging times.

She called on members to continue supporting one another and their spouses to enhance professional performance in the police service.

According to her, the principle of “Giving to Gain” begins with caring for families and members through acts of charity, stressing that POWA remains one united family with LAPOWA and PWA.

A major highlight of the 2026 POWA International Women’s Day celebration was the empowerment of children of POWA, LAPOWA and PWA members in the Imo State Police Command, who were supported with food items and other welfare packages.

… Calls on Gov. Uzodimma,Speaker Olemgbe to interveneÂ

By Iheanyi Enwerem

Youths in Ihitte-Uboma have raised concerns over what they described as a prolonged funding challenge affecting the activities of the local government council.

Speaking with Ikoro Okigwe, a youth leader from the area, Uwasonu Charles Eberechukwu, said the council has allegedly been unable to access its funds for several months, a situation he noted has brought many activities of the local government to a standstill.

According to him, the development has affected governance and slowed down ongoing projects within the LGA.

“How can a local government be starved of funding for months? The Chairman is crying out, councillors are also lamenting, and everything seems to be on standstill,” he said.

Uwasonu explained that without access to funds, it would be difficult for the council to carry out its responsibilities, including fixing roads, completing office buildings already started, and attracting development projects that would benefit the people.

He therefore called on the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, and the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chike Olemgbe, who represents Ihitte-Uboma State Constituency, to urgently intervene and address the situation.

He stressed that timely intervention and transparency are necessary to restore normal administrative and developmental activities in the council, noting that effective grassroots governance remains vital for the development of the people of Ihitte-Uboma.

Imo APC Holds Congress Amidst Rising Tension Over Zoning Arrangement

blank

Tension has gripped Imo State this Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds its State Congress amid heightened political permutations.

The anxiety is not unconnected to speculations surrounding zoning arrangements among the three geopolitical zones of Owerri, Okigwe, and Orlu. Party insiders suggest that whoever emerges as State Chairman may significantly influence the direction of the party’s 2027 governorship ticket.

Sources close to Government House indicate that the chairmanship position may be zoned to Owerri, while Orlu could produce the Deputy Chairman. Political observers argue that such an arrangement, if implemented, might affect Owerri zone’s prospects of fielding a governorship candidate under the APC platform in 2027.

As party faithful and stakeholders keenly await the outcome, all eyes remain on the Congress proceedings to see how the internal dynamics will shape the party’s future trajectory in the state.

Observers have urged contestants and delegates to ensure a peaceful and transparent process in the overall interest of party unity and democratic consolidation.

The affected officers — Sgt. Ekwueme Gift, Sgt. Eto Ikechukwu and Cpl. Divine Ogwuaru — were dismissed on February 12, 2026, following an orderly room trial which found them guilty of offences bordering on armed robbery, kidnapping, car snatching and impersonation.

A civilian accomplice, Elias Chukwu, who allegedly acted as the driver during the operation, has also been charged alongside the dismissed officers.

The suspects were said to have carried out the criminal act on February 8, 2026, along Mbaise Road in Owerri, where they reportedly robbed residents at gunpoint and snatched a vehicle. The stolen vehicle was later tracked to the Owerri-Onitsha Road while the suspects were allegedly on their way to dispose of it before they were apprehended.

Police sources disclosed that the dismissed officers were not officially detailed for patrol on the day of the incident and had falsely presented themselves as members of the Tiger Base Unit of the command while perpetrating the crime.

The offences were found to be contrary to Paragraph E (i) and (iii) of the First Schedule of the Police Act and Regulation 370, punishable under Regulation 371 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended).

CP Bosso, who reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance for corruption and unprofessional conduct, directed the Command’s Legal Department to ensure the immediate arraignment of the suspects in court.

“It will no longer be business as usual for erring officers in this command. Any officer found culpable of misconduct or criminality will face the full weight of the law,” the Commissioner stated.

He urged members of the public to provide credible information that would assist the command in sanitising the system, assuring that more officers under investigation would face similar disciplinary action if found guilty.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the development, stating that the officers were promptly apprehended, thoroughly investigated and summarily dismissed in line with extant laws guiding the conduct of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

Okoye said he wholeheartedly support the CP, adding that the suspects have to be charged to court, noting that the action underscores the command’s commitment to accountability, professionalism and restoration of public confidence.

The command further encouraged residents to report cases of police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit Desk line: 08148024755, assuring that all reports would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

I won’t apologise to Obamas- Trump

blank

President Donald Trump on Friday refused to apologize or admit any error after sharing, and later deleting, a video on his Truth Social platform that included a racist clip portraying former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One late Friday, Trump insisted he made “no mistake” in posting the content and has no intention of offering an apology.

“I didn’t make a mistake,” Trump said.

The roughly minute-long video, posted late Thursday night, primarily promoted false claims of voter fraud and irregularities in voting machines related to the 2020 election. However, near the end, it featured a brief, offensive segment, reportedly AI-generated, showing the Obamas’ faces superimposed onto the bodies of apes, set to the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Trump explained that he had only viewed the initial portion of the clip before directing it to be shared.

“I didn’t see the whole thing. I looked at the first part, and it was really about voter fraud in the machines, how crooked it is, how disgusting it is,” he said. “Then I gave it to the people. Generally, they look at the whole thing. But I guess somebody didn’t.”

The post drew swift bipartisan condemnation, including from several Republican lawmakers who called it offensive and urged its removal. The video was taken down from Truth Social after several hours amid the backlash. White House officials initially defended the post as originating from an “internet meme,” but later attributed the sharing to a staff member’s error.

When pressed directly on whether he condemned the racist imagery in the video, Trump responded, “Of course I do.”

President Tinubu’s Reforms Restoring Global Community’s Confidence,VP Shettima

President Tinubu’s Reforms Restoring Global Community’s Confidence,VP Shettima

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has said the ongoing reforms of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are beginning to restore the confidence of the global community in Nigeria.

This, he said, explains why persons from foreign countries now choose to participate in professional courses like the Professionals’ Certification Programme in Nigeria.

Senator Shettima made the observation on Thursday during the inaugural Convocation Ceremony of the Professionals’ Certification Programme held at the old banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Vice President, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, noted that the first cohort of certified procurement professionals is a milestone that indicates the firm resolve of the administration to implement the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said, “On this day, we commemorate the 2,100 certified procurement professionals from Nigeria and around the globe. This is far from a trivial accomplishment. It implies that the global community is beginning to have faith in Nigeria’s reform endeavours, the program’s credibility, and the gravity of its content.

“The fact that professionals from foreign countries have elected to participate in this inaugural cohort is a clear indication that Nigeria is no longer satisfied with mediocrity in procurement practices, but is instead consciously establishing itself as a benchmark on the continent and beyond.”

VP Shettima recalled that many years back, procurement in Nigeria was considered as an administrative necessity that was often misinterpreted and abused.

Far from such perception, he said procurement under the present administration is at the core of governance, and that “the manner in which public resources are transformed into roads, hospitals, schools, security infrastructure, and social services is under its control.

“When procurement fails, development fails. People are adversely affected when procurement is not documented. The current administration recognises this reality and, motivated by its devotion to the nation, has elected to confront it directly,” the VP added.

The Vice President maintained that for an ambitious country like Nigeria, “the prudent, transparent, and strategic management of public resources is not a technical afterthought,” even as he pointed out that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, “it is the engine room of development.”

He continued: “It (procurement) shapes the quality of our roads and railways, the resilience of our healthcare system, the reach of our schools and universities, and ultimately the confidence citizens place in their government.

“This administration understands that truth clearly, which is why public procurement reform occupies a central place in our governance strategy.

“The Bureau of Public Procurement stands at the heart of this effort. Beyond its regulatory role, the BPP carries a deeper and more enduring responsibility: the cultivation of a professional, ethical, and highly competent procurement workforce. Reform cannot survive on circulars alone.”

To the graduands, VP Shettima reminded them that the are the pioneers among the graduates who bear a unique obligation due to their status as the first, just as he urged them to ensure their conscience is guided by their certification.

“Stewards of value for money and custodians of public trust, you are. In classrooms, clinics, markets, and communities throughout the nation, your decisions will have an impact on lives that may not garner headlines but will be felt.

“Let your conscience be guided by your certification. Your practice should be defined by integrity. Your compass should be the loyalty of one’s country,” the VP told the graduands.

He congratulated the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), the leadership of the SPESSE Project, the World Bank, and other Nigeria’s development partners, saying “the milestone should serve to fortify our institutions, re-establish public trust, and bring Nigeria closer to the nation of our dreams.”

Earlier, Senate Committee Chairman on Procurement, Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, pledged the support of the National Assembly for the sustenance of the Nigeria Procurement Certification Programme.

He urged the graduands to uphold the highest ethical standards, apply skills and knowledge acquired through the programme for the advancement of the public procurement system in Nigeria.

The lawmaker noted that the sustainability of the project has laid a solid foundation for a more transparent and progressive public service, adopting procurement as a catalyst for national transformation and development.

On his part, the Director General of BPP, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, said the Nigeria Procurement Certification Programme being implemented by the agency in collaboration with development partners, is aimed at enhancing sustainable capacity building and nurturing a viable procurement culture in Nigeria’s public service.

He added that the programme serves as the special purpose vehicle for implementing capacity building programmes for public procurement execution and ensuring that officers are equipped with the necessary skills to actualise the goals and objectives of the Federal Government.

The DG also announced President Tinubu’s approval for the full deployment of community-based procurement officers across the country as part of measures to ensure alignment with global standards, best practices and judicious utilization of resources.

On his part, the National Project Coordinator, Dr Joshua Attah, who made a presentation on the history and impact of the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) Project, noted that Nigeria through the project is building a legacy that will impact procurement processes in the public and private sectors.

He said the commencement of the programme and graduation ceremony marks a historic step towards strengthening accountability in public procurement, highlighting government’s commitment in ensuring transparency and integrity in the public service.

He noted that so far, the Centres of Excellence in Procurement have trained over 40,000 candidates in capacity building programmes, training and assessment as well as professional certification through digital learning and certification platforms developed by the BPP.

For her part, World Bank’s Chief Procurement Officer, Ms Hiba Tahboub, said the Bank acknowledges the importance attached to the programme by the Federal Government, which she noted, has manifested in the consistent investment and support for the procurement function in public service.

She urged other countries in Africa to emulate the Nigerian example, which has seen the realisation of an early vision transform into structured certification of the procurement function in Nigeria’s public service.

Why I Joined APGA – Dr. Fabian Ihekweme

By Christabel Adaugo

Dr. Fabian Ihekweme has explained his decision to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the political platform to actualise his aspiration of becoming the next Senator representing Imo North Senatorial District, citing years of marginalisation and underrepresentation of the Okigwe Zone.

Ihekwueme popularly known as ‘Omu’ by political admirers, served as a one-time Commissioner in Imo State, and recently joined APGA last Thursday.

According to him, apart from Senators Emeka Echeruo, Ifeanyi Araraume and the late Ben Uwajumogu, the people of Okigwe Zone have largely been saddled with imposed representatives who neither emerged through the will of the people nor served their collective interests. He lamented that such individuals, rather than defending the zone, allegedly became political tools used to further marginalise Okigwe.

Dr. Ihekweme further alleged that a powerful and dangerous political cabal, backed by external forces outside Okigwe Zone, has continued to undermine democracy in the area by suppressing the true wishes of the people.

He declared that his entry into the race is a deliberate move to liberate Okigwe Zone from what he described as a long-standing political stranglehold.

He described APGA as the only political party in the South East with a clear ideology focused on Igbo unity, brotherhood and economic emancipation, anchored on the philosophy of “Onye Aghala Nwanne Ya.”

He noted that the legacy and spirit of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu remain the driving force of the party, adding that APGA represents the pride of the Igbo people and offers a better political future for Okigwe Zone.
