Owerri, November 13, 2025 – The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Her Excellency Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, PhD, has praised Governor Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma for his proactive efforts in protecting human rights in the state. She made the remarks on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Imo State, to her office at the Government House, Owerri.
Lady Ekomaru highlighted key initiatives by the Governor, including the abolition of harmful laws against widows, swift action against offenders—citing the recent Awo-Omamma incident—and the promotion of equal access to education, healthcare, and other state facilities. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of all Imo residents and expressed readiness to collaborate with the Commission on its advocacy efforts.
The Deputy Governor encouraged the NHRC to engage stakeholders such as the Imo First Lady, Chief (Barr.) Chioma Uzodimma, known for her advocacy for women, widows, and the girl-child. She also called for increased awareness campaigns in rural communities, free legal services, and advocacy for women’s participation in politics. Lady Ekomaru assured that requests, including the construction of the access road to the Commission’s office, would be forwarded to the Governor.
Speaking during the visit, NHRC State Coordinator Dr. Val Madubuko thanked the Deputy Governor and briefed her on the ongoing 16-day activism campaign against sexual and gender-based violence, themed “End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.” The campaign includes community outreach, sensitization programs, radio talks, and advocacy for women and girls’ rights.
Also present were the Principal Secretary (Covering Duty) to the Deputy Governor, Pastor Chris Akushie, and other senior officials of the office.
