Understanding and harnessing potentials of happiness as utility asset

blank

Written by Sir Paul E. Anyanwu (KSJI ; npom ; Obata Uloadimma)

blank

EXPOSITORY SEQUITUR . Happiness is a state of being ; it is a warm and delightful state. In fact, it could succinctly be defined as a psychological state precipitated by the conjugality of the heart and mind including the soul thus birthing a blissful disposition called HAPPINESS whose benefits are of gargantuan proportion . By impacting positively the state of being of its host in a socio – economic as well as psycho – Physical manners, happiness has shown and proved its status not only as a utility asset but also a dependable tool that can transform a distasteful disposition to one that is exciting , cheering and rewarding.

It should be understood that when happiness becomes habitual, it aggregates or translates to abundance which hibernates and incubates in the heart, mind and soul while radiating and reposing externally on the face as well as internally and or on the entire body of the host . It is usually from such abundance that you see a frequent display of excitements, joys, ecstasies, bliss and what have you. Remember the popular saying “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaket” .

In this case, it is not only the mouth that would be speaking , but the eyes, the lips and the entire face will be gesticulating and reverberating . Such abundant happiness enhances the overall state or well being of the affected or happy individual . In like manner, when the overall state or well being of an individual is enhanced, it cuts across both mental and physical health . They all will be positively affected or enhanced so to speak . In such a situation, the rate or frequency at which the Doctor or the hospital is visited becomes greatly minimized if not reduced to zero. Given the above scenario, the fund, and enormous fund as it were, which could have gone to the doctor or the hospital becomes Savings which is an element of Abstention from consumption and such Abstention enables capital to be built and a built up capital has wealth creation as its consequence which is largely a precipitate of abundant happiness .

The import of this is that when you are not spending on consumption (especially when you have no need for it by virtue of your frugality or your managerial acumen ), consumption here includes or covers most recurrent family expenses ; when you are not spending on them, by implication you are building capital or embarking on capital formation from where more capital projects/capital assets will blossom . HAPPINESS is therefore a necessary feature, tool or ingredient in this capital formation process because when and where it (Happiness) exists, unknown to you, it scares away and surprisingly too most debilitating health hazards including other undiagnosed and subterranean health issues and challenges that may rear their ugly heads later on unannounced. Unfortunately , these health areas constitute the major fulcrum of the family expenses outside feeding and Education or trade.

So, with happiness in place, the expenses which could have been made on health issues will turn around to form more income in your favour and by so doing freeing up funds which ultimately will become part of capital formation.

This goes a long way to assert the premium position occupied by happiness in the capital formation process whose bottom line is Wealth Creation for the family, for the State and or for the Nation. Thus, Capital Formation arising from Savings whose source is Abstention from Consumption as mentioned above is a SINE QUA NON (something you cannot do without) in Wealth Creation which is its ultimate goal. Ironically , Happiness does not connote absence of difficulties , challenges or problems.

Again, it does not connote possession of everything in abundance or not being in want; neither is it not lacking in anything. Going further again, it does not connote possession of Fat bank accounts or being connected to prominent individuals or occupying a lucrative/elusive position.

All these do not conform to Happiness because you might possess all of them while happiness is still lacking in you or very far from you which becomes an urgent call for action because it portends danger. Conversely, Happiness denotes being contented with the little you have , even with the least in your possession.

It also denotes not attaching importance to everything around you or everything you come across or not getting worried very often and unnecessarily. It further denotes looking forward to positive life experiences such as achieving goals, spending time with loved ones or engaging in activities that give you joy. Happiness can even arise spontaneously without any apparent external cause especially where the mind, heart and soul are laid bare .

Given all these, it becomes essential therefore to cultivate and embrace the habit of being happy very often since “Ma k’ọ́jọ́ , boys must na gay'”(as posited by the LEGENDARY OSADEBE ). This is exactly the underlying spirit that Propels and Spurs happiness to the enviable position it occupies in the life of its host. Fortunately and interestingly, Happiness is Free and most importantly, it is not part of the Subsidy removal or Subsidy reintroduction.

This means that no FOREX(Foreign Exchange) in Dollars or in Pounds or even in Euros where mind boggling Figures will be hitting the airwaves to the chagrin and feverish embarrassment of the have – nots or the downtrodden in the Country . Again, to the glory of God, Happiness is devoid of the usual Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) where the same FOREX mentioned above takes the centre stage monumentally accounting for the Federal Government’s inability to fix the Nation’s ailing refineries in preference for imported petroleum products and lubricants where the Hard Currencies exchange hands with unknown faces in Nigeria. So, Happiness is not affected or afflicted by any of the above thus making it a matter of choice to embrace.

So, since it is a matter of choice and the challenges which tend to confront happiness are part of nature and must be sorted out as they arise in line with ones ability and capability, suffice it to say, in the main, that these impediments which are natural can be contained and subdued with a strong will for happiness to thrive and soar . Thus, in Consideration of all the attributes on the side of happiness , why do you think it should not be embraced since it acts as a natural lubricant to the mind, heart and soul as well as manifesting in the overall health of it’s host. Remember the Biblical Ethiopian Eunuch ; in his encounter with St. Philip the apostle , we saw how he demanded for baptism after jointly studying the scripture with Philip while both were riding on his Chariot and upon getting to a pool of water , he “queried” Philip as to know what would stand on his way from being baptized given the availability of water, the availability of the baptizer(Philip) and the availability of the Eunuch himself who turned out as the Catechumen that needed the baptism. In fact, there was nothing whatsoever that could prevent the baptism from taking place and he was subsequently baptized by Philip.

So, why not take a cue from the Ethiopian Eunuch so that abundant Happiness will come your way with abundant wealth creation concomitantly following . Where there is peace, progress and development are ever found.

So why not take a cue from the Ethiopian Eunuch so that abundant happiness will come your way with abundant wealth creation concomitantly following. ABOVE ALL THESE, HAPPINESS IS THE FORERUNNER AND PLACEHOLDER FOR PEACE. REMEMBER THAT WHERE THERE IS PEACE, PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT ARE EVER FOUND. THIS SHOWS THAT HAPPINESS IS INCIDENTAL TO PEACE, PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT . SO ALWAYS ALLOW HAPPINESS TO RULE YOUR DAY . As you do that, abundant grace shall dwell upon you.

The Problems facing Nigeria, by Sir Paul Anyanwu

blank

” Danger knows full well that Caesar is more Dangerous than he, noting that he and danger were two Lions littered in one day and he became the elder and more terrible”.

blank

THE PROBLEMS FACED BY NIGERIA UP TILL THIS DAY COULD BE SAID TO BE HIERARCHICALLY ROOTED AND STRUCTURED IN THE SEQUENCE ENUMERATED HEREUNDER : PLEASE STUDY AND GIVE US YOUR TAKE AS IT AFFECTS THE SEQUENCE ; VIZ : NO. (1) : ETHNICITY/TRIBALISM . This is believed to be the core problem. This is so even when it is not yielding any dividend to the majority amongst them but they will continue to hold firmly to it as if to say , “let the consequences or it’s negative outcome be upon them and their children including the ones unborn ” . NO. (2 ) : RELIGIOUS BELIEF : This belief is always hypocritical with deceit undercover in most cases by the elites to the detriment of the least class of people therein with abject poverty always starring them in their faces). No. (3) : CORRUPTION : This is believed to be deeply and dangerously rooted. Overcoming it appears not to be in sight since they believe that when you fight it, it will fight you back and might even subdue you .

But where there is a will, there’s always a way. No. (4) : EGOCENTRICITY OF PRESUMED LEADERS. This factor is essentially responsible for the prevailing unnecessary acquisition of wealth up to the level of being termed primitive acquisition of wealth even for generations that may not be born. This is as dangerous as danger itself. I wish this is the era of JULIUS CAESAR of the SHAKESPEAREAN fame who said that ” “Danger knows full well that Caesar is more Dangerous than he, noting that he and danger were two Lions littered in one day and he became the elder and more terrible”, if it were his era , it would have been most suited and interesting for him to handle this terrifying matter on our behalf.

No.(5) : IGNORANCE OF MOST FOLLOWERS. Illiteracy comes as topmost here and it is the major culprit. In most cases, these followers are deliberately denied Education by their leaders so that they won’t realize themselves and would continue to weaponize it ad infinitum thus causing a collosal , irredeemable and debilitating effects in the long run .

No. (6) : INCOMPETENCE ON THE PART OF SOME LEADERS : This becomes ironical when the country can boost of Technocrats, captains of Industries and Managers of both Human and Material resources scattered across the globe. You would liken this to a situation where one is asked to go to any Goats’ Farm, Camp/Ban to select one goat and he/she decides to select a HE GOAT. Of course you know the implication of that. This scenario has always played out and has largely contributed to our undoing as a nation. Those were the order.

NOTE : If you are in tune with this sequence/order, please press the notification button for the ” Ayes” to have it where possible. On the other hand, if you are out of tune with this sequence, do well to review it so that if possible still the “Nays” can have it. An arrangement is in place to have this as an OGANIGRAM with a view to addressing these problems for the societal good. Nigeria shall rise again at least for this and future generations. Let me hear you say, Iseeee.

Afreximbank Begins Construction Quality Assurance Center In Imo

▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ “Imo’s conducive business climate and human capital made it easy~ Mrs. Kanayo Uwani, Afrexim Boss

By Iheanyi Enwerem

The Imo State Government, in partnership with the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank), has broken ground on a state-of-the-art African Quality Assurance Center along Imo Airport Road, Ngor Okpala LGA.

This groundbreaking initiative, inspected on May 19, 2025, by a joint team led by Chief Barr. Rex C. Anunobi, Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Dr. Bola Adigun, Technical Adviser to the Governor, and Mrs. Kanayo Uwani, Afrexim Bank’s Executive Vice President, promises to catapult African products onto the global stage with unparalleled quality and competitiveness.

The African Quality Assurance Center is a game-changer, offering cutting-edge testing, inspection, and certification services to ensure African goods meet rigorous international standards. By eliminating the costly and time-consuming need to send Nigerian products abroad for quality assurance, the facility will save millions while boosting efficiency.

Imo State’s strategic location, thriving oil and gas sector, rich agricultural heritage, and proximity to resource-rich regions make it the perfect home for this visionary project.

Mrs. Kanayo Uwani, Afrexim Bank’s Vice President, praised Imo State’s abundant resources and investor-friendly environment, crediting Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma’s infrastructure investments for making the state a magnet for projects like this. “Imo’s conducive business climate and human capital made it the ideal choice for this center,” she said, highlighting the bank’s commitment to empowering African trade.

Chief Barr. Rex C. Anunobi, equally elated, expressed delight at the project’s progress and urged the contractor to adhere to specifications and timelines. He painted a vibrant picture of Imo’s economic future, noting that the Quality Assurance Center, alongside the Orashi Free Trade Zone in Oguta, will ignite a commercial boom, creating thousands of jobs and positioning Imo as a hub of economic activity in the coming months. “This is a new dawn for Imo State,” he proclaimed, pledging the state’s unwavering support to ensure the project’s success.

Architect Obinna Ikeka, the site supervisor, radiated optimism during the inspection. He emphasized that the center will serve as a certification hub for agricultural and oil and gas products destined for global markets, particularly from Nigeria’s South East and South South zones.

Equipped with advanced laboratory facilities, the center will rigorously test raw materials and finished goods, ensuring they meet global standards and enhancing their value in international trade. “This facility will transform large quantities of raw materials into high-value finished products, significantly increasing Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings,” Ikeka declared, confidently assuring completion within a year.

The African Quality Assurance Center is more than a facility—it’s a bold statement of Africa’s readiness to compete globally. By fostering quality, innovation, and economic growth, Imo State is leading the charge toward a prosperous future, not just for Nigeria but for the entire continent. With construction racing toward completion, the world eagerly awaits the day this center opens its doors, heralding a golden era of African excellence.

Breaking: Imo Govt accused of demolishing EEDC District office

blank

There was confusion on Wednesday as officials of the Imo State Government arrived with a bulldozer and brought down the Orlu District office of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC.

Ikoro Okigwe gathered that staff members of the DisCo were unable to salvage any personal or company property as they were manhandled by the security operatives who escorted the government officials.

The Chairman of Orlu Local Government Area, Hon. Chris Mbaeri was alleged to have personally witnessed the decision.

In a statement made available to our correspondent, Mr Emeka Ezeh, Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, said the government officials offered no explanation on why the structure was brought down.

He said, “In the early hours of Wednesday, the 14th May, 2025, at about 8.30am, the premises of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), Orlu District, Imo State was visited with an excavator sent by the Imo State Government.

“The excavator immediately commenced the demolition of the property from the back fence, where it gained access from, pulling down the store, the cash office, and the security house.”

Ezeh lamented that properties and equipment belonging to the company were all destroyed, adding that “staff who were around were denied access when they attempted to salvage the properties and equipment.”

“This development is quite disturbing as there is no known reason for the action, nor was there any notice or communication made to EEDC in that regard, rather we were told that they were acting under the directive of the state government.

“In an attempt to resist the action and enquire what necessitated the sudden demolition, the District Business Manager, along with one of the operations staff, were assaulted and whisked away to Owerri by a special security squad known as ‘Tiger Base’.

“As at the time of issuing this statement, the management of EEDC is still in the dark as to why this undeserving calamity is meted on it,” he disclosed.

The EEDC requested the Imo State Government “to at least let us know why an office premises we have occupied for over two decades is suddenly being demolished in the manner it was done in the early hours of today”.

It was gathered that this angered the power regulation company to switch off electricity supply in major areas in the State.

The Ideal Woman by Lady Helen Pat OKEKE

Thriving and Reaching Her Full Potential.

By Lady Helen Pat OKEKE

Hello, beautiful people!

Welcome back to my corner of The Ideal Woman.

I trust we are all in good spirits.

As I reflect on the life of an ideal woman, I am compelled to ask: beyond being godly, wise, moral, and striving for the best in her daily life, what else does she need to make her journey easier? What additional factors can help her thrive and reach her full potential?

Our world sometimes overlooks or underestimates the invaluable role women play in nation-building—starting from the smallest units, such as families, to shaping communities and society at large. While the ideal woman possesses inner strength and virtues, she also requires external support systems that empower her to flourish.

An Enabling Environment for Growth:

The ideal woman thrives best when she has access to an environment that fosters growth and opportunity. A society that values education, equal rights, and career advancement provides women with a solid foundation upon which they can build fulfilling lives.

The importance of education cannot be overstated. Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, emphasized this when she said, “The power of education is transformative. It lifts people out of poverty. It allows them to dream beyond their circumstances.”

Education equips a woman with knowledge, confidence, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to her family and society.

Additionally, legal frameworks and social policies play a crucial role. A society that prioritizes gender equality, safety, and economic opportunity allows women to rise beyond imposed limitations. Countries that have implemented supportive policies—such as paid maternity leave, workplace protections, and access to affordable healthcare—tend to see higher female participation in leadership and economic ventures.

A Supportive and Faithful Spouse:

While a woman’s strength is her own, if married – having a loving, faithful, and supportive spouse significantly enhances her ability to thrive. The ideal marriage is built upon mutual respect, understanding, faithfulness and shared responsibility. A man who sees his wife as an equal partner and actively encourages her dreams helps her flourish.

Proverbs 31:11 says, “The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.” A husband who trusts and believes in his wife’s abilities fosters her confidence. Just as she supports him, he should in turn provide her with emotional and practical support, whether in her career, personal aspirations, or daily life responsibilities.

A Strong Support Network:

No one thrives in isolation. The ideal woman benefits immensely from a community that shares her values and provides encouragement. Whether it’s family, friends, mentors, or faith-based groups, having people who uplift and inspire makes the journey easier.

The African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is also applicable to personal growth. A woman surrounded by people who encourage her talents, validate her efforts, and celebrate her successes is far more likely to reach her highest potential than one who navigates challenges alone.

Mentorship also plays a crucial role. Women who have role models to look up to—whether professionally or personally—tend to navigate life with greater confidence. Figures like Oprah Winfrey, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Malala Yousafzai have spoken extensively about how their support systems and mentors helped them succeed.

Financial Independence and Career Growth:

A woman’s ability to thrive is significantly tied to her financial independence. Economic empowerment allows her to make informed decisions, secure her future, and contribute meaningfully to her household and society.

A financially independent woman is better equipped to invest in education, raise her children with greater security, and support her loved ones. The ability to create wealth whether through entrepreneurship, corporate careers, or skilled tradesbrings stability and self-sufficiency.

As women continue to break barriers in various industries, it is vital that society supports their ambition rather than confines them to outdated roles. As Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo, put it: “Leadership is hard to define, and good leadership is even harder. But if you can get people to follow you to the ends of the earth, you are a great leader.”

Self-Care and Mental Well-being:

Amid life’s responsibilities, the ideal woman must also prioritize self-care and mental well-being. Too often, women pour their energy into others while neglecting themselves. Emotional and physical health should never be secondary.

Regular rest, exercise, meditation, and meaningful social interactions contribute to a woman’s overall well-being. Investing in self-care helps maintain balance and ensures she remains strong enough to fulfill her roles effectively.

Moreover, seeking therapy or counseling when needed is not a sign of weakness, but rather strength. Women should feel free to express their concerns and process emotions without fear of judgment.

Purpose and Fulfillment:

The ultimate factor that helps a woman thrive is a sense of purpose. When a woman is living out her calling—whether through faith, family, career, or service—she moves with conviction and confidence.

Mother Teresa once said, “The greatest good is what we do for one another.”

A woman who finds fulfillment in making a difference, whether in her home or the wider world radiates inner joy and peace.

When women embrace their passions, pursue meaningful goals, and contribute to a cause greater than themselves, they truly come alive.

The ideal woman is more than a role model—she is a force for change, growth, and inspiration. While personal virtue and strength are essential, external factors such as a supportive environment, financial independence, strong relationships, and self-care equally contribute to her ability to thrive.

It is time for societies to create spaces where women feel empowered to reach their full potential.

As we continue to reflect upon the life of the ideal woman, let us champion environments that enable her to flourish.

Imo and the Proliferation of Kings, by Ugoji Egbujo

blank

In Imo state, every family can become an autonomous community. It wasn’t always so. Perhaps at some point, somebody saw atomisation as development. Every square foot is now an ancient kingdom. So the state is now a conglomeration of fragments of communities called autonomous communities. As a result, every neighbourhood has an Eze. Some of them govern from the United States.

With kings come cabinets. Every Eze goes about minting chiefs to fatten his clout. Nearly everyone is now a chief. They probably know it has lost all significance. But they persist in distributing the red caps and feathers. Positions once reserved for excellence, industry and valour are now on the shelf for all comers for a small fee.

Though the traditional institutions are largely relics and still exist more for nostalgia, history and ceremony than governance, this bastardisation is damaging a threadbare moral fabric. If the debasement of what is left of the traditional institution was only serviced egos and provided sentimental relief, it might have been endured. But it has had a telling effect on society

Every drug dealer, every yahoo yahoo boy who dupes some mugu in Brazil or Vietnam, comes home to assemble the ummunna. At that point, money doesn’t just talk, it swears. Bob Dylan was right. At the sight of a goat and some bottles of beer, elders gather to honour the call of the little village thief who left home the year before. He tells them he has gone and conquered. No questions are asked. In front of living money, the elders are chickens and sheep. They pour libation, drink and belch. He tells them he wants a chieftaincy title. They chorus their approval. He goes to the Eze and gives him what he eats. The Eze approves his request without consulting the gods. The new chief picks for himself one of the self-aggrandizing titles he had fantasized about when he used to loiter about in the village. The date is fixed. He plans to shake the village. He has arrived. The gods stay aloof, perhaps drunk on stolen wine

A literal idiot becomes a role model for the youth. At every opportunity, he gathers people to eat, mocking hard work and artisanry with their exhibitionism. In return, they offer him obeisance, laugh loudly and dredge up his enemies for verbal crucifixion. Swimming in the vortex of the whirling adulation, he regales them with his exploits in foreign land. In the end, he admonishes them not to be dull. What he says doesn’t matter. The youths are attentive; they all want to be like him. Their life ambition is to get rich overnight and catch the cruise ship of vainglory. The only apprenticeship that delivers that readily now is Yahoo Yahoo and drug dealing. And perhaps politics, if one can find a godfather. Old things, like taboos, have passed away. Good name is still perhaps better than riches but it’s now cheap and easy to buy. The good man is the notice-me-philanthropist, the man who builds a church, the man who sponsors football matches, and the man who smuggles youths into the drug trade in Malaysia. Every politician is a very good man. While the ummunna fellowship lasts, gun-rotting policemen hang at all corners, protecting and dignifying the smooth criminal, who is now called a high chief.

With the Eze’s cabinet brimming with conspicuously shady and dissolute characters, decent people have no incentive to participate. Where they convince themselves to take a title to help revamp the institution from within or to satisfy their parents, they cannot initiate any reforms because they are a miserable minority. The traditional institution gathers human rust and suffers progressive degeneration. The mingling of a few decent people with the horde of money bags rather than curb only legitimises the perfidy. The devaluation is relentless and with it comes the normalization of deviance.

In Imo many communities can no longer speak out against evil. They can’t condemn Yahoo Yahoo in the open because their ozos and ndi ichie are jobmen. They can bark against psychotropic drugs and prostitution. But they can’t speak boldly against drug trafficking. They have by the changes to their value system, directly or indirectly, licensed their youths to pursue ‘ego mbute’ by all means. In most communities, an advance fee fraud committed against a lovesick woman in Vietnam isn’t considered evil.

In Imo, we used to believe that whatever a man sowed he shall reap. We used to believe that evil didn’t pay because it ultimately brought great misfortune. We used to believe that stolen money shouldn’t be used to train children because it would contaminate their destinies. We used to say that blood was strong and must not be shed unlawfully. We believed that if a community condoned evil, evil would consume it. These and other beliefs made us industrious and honest and made us our brothers’ keepers. Now these beliefs all but seem obsolete

Recently a community in Imo sought to restore its tattered moral fabric. It wanted to banish evil from its land. The youths felt their progress and longevity were being hampered by the surge of evil in their community. They beseeched the elders to approach the native gods to rouse them. They want the gods to resume active and ruthless vigilante duties. After an initial hesitation, the village elders yielded to the demand of the youths.

On the day appointed, the elders of the clans congregate at the village square to entreat the local gods. And before restless cameras, they reached new covenants. Soon after the rites, the video clips went viral, and the youths went berserk. The elders had asked the spirits of the land not to treat with leniency any cases of theft, rape, fraud, land grabbing, murder etc committed by all sons and daughters of their land. That was all. The youths were bemused. They accused the elders of seeking to wipe out the young, wondering why they left the curses so open-ended. They had expected the elders to know that the gods should only react if the evil was perpetrated against a member of the community and not against strangers and foreigners. The elders couldn’t tell the youths that evil was evil. They succumbed and reversed the incantations.

Imo is a good example of the wanton fragmentation of communities leading to the bastardisation of the traditional institution and subsequent trivialisation of communal honours. But Imo is not special. The other states in Igbo land are similarly afflicted to varying degrees. This scourge is ravaging the entire country in different ways. Granted many states have preserved their centuries-old empires and kingdoms intact; nevertheless, the voracious appetite for titles and cheap recognition has degraded our national value system. No region is free from traditional glorification without moral evaluation. Every politician and money bag, of all tribes, is a traditional title holder. The Imo malady is a national disease.

A cursory glance at the country, the list of holders of its national honours, the clamour for state creation, the multiplicity of ministries, the duplication of agencies, the industrialization of awards, the mushrooming of churches and NGOs, the sale appointments and postings, will indicate a troubling prognosis.

Only a complete reset can salvage this country.

Nnamdi Obiaraeri replies Akaolisa over Imo 2027 Guber

blank

FACTS ARE SACRED By Prof Obiaraeri, N. O.

PROF IWU HAS SINCE ACCURATELY NARRATED THE POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS, LEGAL CIRCUMSTANCES AND JUDICIAL DECISIONS THAT LED TO THE SUSPENSION OF VOTING AT THE IMO GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION IN 2007

RE: “Again, COC AKAOLISA EXPLODES- There won’t be charter of Equity for Okigwe until justice is done over Martin Agbaso 2007 Gov’ship case ….”

My attention has been drawn to the screaming headline of The BIG TRUTH Newspaper of Friday 18 April 2025 titled “Again, COC AKAOLISA EXPLODES- There won’t be charter of Equity for Okigwe until justice is done over Martin Agbaso 2007 Gov’ship case …”

This highly prejudicial publication made against Okigwe Zone was credited to Chief C.O.C Akaolisa, who is the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner For Justice, Imo State. I feel compelled, by good reason and for the sake of posterity, to make this rejoinder in order to set the records straight because the statement in the said “explosion” is ahistorical, incorrect and far from the truth. At all material times, members of the public deserve to be told the truth. No one is entitled to rewrite history, distort facts, twist events in order to serve his or her putpose, score political points or secure undue advantage. According to Bernard Baruch, “Every man has a right to his opinion, but no man has a right to be wrong in his facts”.

Out of abundant caution, Chief C. O. C Akaolisa’s is reminded, as it is obvious that he missed the publication, that Prof Maurice M. Iwu, the erstwhile Chairman of INEC, had in a personally signed statement dated 07/03/24 titled “Re: Imo Charter of Equity … by Mike Nwachukwu” narrated the facts, events and circumstances that led to the suspension of voting in the Imo Governorship election which held on 14 April, 2007.

In order not to add to, subtract from or water down the rational, sequential and unassailable reasons why the voting in the 2007 Imo governorship election was suspended, relevant excerpts from Prof Maurice M. Iwu’s personally signed public statement dated 07/03/24 titled “Re: Imo Charter of Equity … by Mike Nwachukwu” are reproduced verbatim hereunder-

“Re: Imo Charter of Equity… by Mike Nwachukwu

I have hitherto refrained from responding to various comments and attacks on my person in connection with my period of public service or my position on public issues but Mr. Mike Nwachukwu’s piece contains many wrong assertions which must be corrected for the sake of history.

1. The suspension of voting at the 2007 Imo State gubernatorial election on April 14, 2007 was due to the dispute regarding the PDP governorship candidate, which did not in anyway affect the House Assembly elections held on the same day. The Supreme Court had declared Dist. Senator Ifeanyi Ararume as the authentic PDP candidate against Engr. Charles Ugwu whose name was on the ballot paper. The apex court’s judgement was delivered a few days to the election which made it impossible for INEC to put Sen. Ararume’s name on the ballot. The leader of PDP, then President Obasanjo publicly declared in Owerri that the party had no governorship candidate contrary to the position of the law. INEC was bound by the extant Supreme Court declaration which made Sen. Ararume the PDP’s candidate. The leadership of INEC had advised the party to allow the election to hold with the names as contained on the ballot and that the correct name will be reflected at the election results declaration in the event of the party’s victory at the election and that would have been similar to the case of Rotimi Amaechi and Rufus Omehie of Rivers State. During the 14/04/2007 poll some over zealous individuals disrupted the gubernatorial elections by attempting to forcefully change the name on the ballot paper which led to mutilation of the ballots and violence in some polling units. The decision to suspend the gubernatorial election was taken by the Resident Electoral Commissioner based on his assessment of the situation in accordance with the provisions of the 2006 Electoral Act, which I endorsed. Prior to the completion of polling and before the tabulation of results the REC, the EO and the Ward-level electoral officials had the authority to suspend polling within their levels of authority if in their assessment the integrity of the election was jeopardized by violence or other disruptions. There was no tabulation of results even at the Polling Units, therefore no discernible winner would have been possible.

2. On the purported victory of Chief Martin Agbaso at the Imo Governorship Election of 14/04/2007, the writer of the piece under reference was aware that Chief Martin Agbaso was not officially a candidate of APGA at that election, according to the judgment of a Superior Court and therefore could NOT have won an election which he never contested by law. APGA had a protracted leadership tussle between Chief Victor Umeh and Chief Chekwas Okorie’s factions and Chief Martin Agbaso was to contest the 2007 election under Victor Umeh’s faction. The Superior Court gave a judgement in favour of Chief Okorie’s faction only a few days before the election. Martin Agbaso was already listed by INEC as the APGA candidate for the 2007 elections with a certain Mike Nwachukwu as his running-mate. Mr. Nwachukwu is from Emii, a neighbouring community to Chief Agbaso’s Emekuku hometown and was used as a place-holder to comply with INEC’s timetable for the submission of candidates. The plan was to substitute Mr. Nwachuku’s name with somebody outside Owerri zone for the position of Deputy Governorship candidate. The victorious Okorie’s faction of APGA petitioned the Superior Court again to enforce its judgement as it affected Chief Martin Agbaso and other APGA candidates sponsored by the Victor Umeh’s faction of APGA. The Court issued Form 48 against INEC and its Chairman which compelled INEC to obey the ruling of the Court rather than risk of Contempt of Court judgement with its implications. By that Court order INEC was unable to accept any substitution from Victor Umeh’s faction of APGA and the replacement of Mike Nwachukwu as the Deputy Governorship candidate of APGA. It would have been inconceivable for Chief Martin Agbaso to have deliberately chosen Mr. Mike Nwachukwu from the same Owerri zone as his substantive Deputy. Mr. Mike Nwachukwu as the Director General of APGA Imo State 2007 gubernatorial election campaign was aware that his principal’s name and his own name were retained on the ballot in compliance with a part of the Court’s judgement which ordered maintenance of the Status Quo and as a courtesy to an “Imo son”. Chief Martin Agbaso was NOT the legitimate candidate of APGA and could NOT have won the Imo 2007 Imo State gubernatorial election.

It is noteworthy that the same APGA leadership crisis affected Mr. Peter Obi’s second term election in 2010 but the matter was resolved through INEC’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism which made it possible for Peter Obi to contest the election under APGA after reaching an understanding with both factions of APGA and they accepted that the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu signed the INEC nomination form of Mr. Obi for the 2010 Anambra State governorship election.”

The foregoing copius public statement by the elder statesman Prof Maurice M. Iwu speaks for itself. Fact speaks for itself (res ipsa loquitur). Facts are, and remain, sacred!

Now that Chief C.O.C Akaolisa’s attention has been drawn to the true state of political developments, legal circumstances and judicial decisions that culminated in the suspension of voting in the 2007 Imo Governorship election, I make bold to INVITE him to recant, disavow, retract and or withdraw his reported “explosion” to the effect that it was “Okigwe Zone that scuttled Owerri chance in 2007”. There is no logical, historical or legal reason for Chief Akaolisa or anyone else to have come to that wrong and fallacious conclusion. Furthermore, such a conclusion will be baseless given that no person or group of persons, organisation or political party has come out to rebut, deny or contradict the facts and circumstances that led to the suspension of voting in the 2007 Imo governorship election as narrated in the widely circulated public statement by Prof Maurice Iwu since 07/03/24 [more than one year ago].

Chief Akaolisa, as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner For Justice, knows more than everyone else that admitted or unchallenged or uncontroverted facts require no further proof.

In sum, it is indubitable that Chief Akaolisa made a huge mistake by “exploding” as he did ostensibly on the wrong premise.

No one is above mistakes. According to Bruce Lee, “Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them”. As a very Senior Learned Gentleman, Chief Akaolisa is enjoined to do the needful by apologising without reservation to the good people of Okigwe Zone. Posterity will be happy to have him correct himself and set the records straight even as he is a highly esteemed son in-law to Okigwe Zone. Facts are sacred [veritatibus non est neganda]. Truth is courage.

A new normal is possible!

The Deputy Governor of Imo State Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, PhD, while addressing community leaders from Mbaitoli

By Iheanyi Enwerem

Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Dr. Chinyere Ekomaru has called on Village Heads in the state to work hand in glove with royal fathers of their communities to drive the developmental initiative of the 3R Shared Prosperity administration of the Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma.

Ekomaru made the assertion while receiving members of Mbaitoli Council of Village Heads in a courtesy visit,at her office, recently.

She said Uzodimma has enormous confidence in the rural government structure, the reason he recognizes the Town Unions, with the President Generals as the heads of administration and traditional rulers as the custodians of culture and tradition.

“Our Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma has done so much within a short time. Recently, named the Infrastructure Governor of the Year in Nigeria, following his sterling infrastructural revolution in Imo state.

“Every facility he has put in place is ours and for our benefits, so, as such, demands we protect the facilities with utmost passion.

“Our Governor, is poised to make Imo the economic hub of the South East and to achieve that, all hands must be on deck.

“Imo is safe today because of his spirited effort to defeat insecurity and protect Imolites. Thankfully, traditional rulers and village heads are no longer administrating their communities from the cities or diaspora but their different communities and villages.

The Governor means well for all Imo indigenes and residents, so keep supporting him and his 3-R administration in the state”, the Deputy Governor stated.

She however, appreciated the village heads for their concerted effort towards peace, development and protection of their communities, while reiterating they work harmoniously with the traditional rulers in the protection of their villages, by reporting suspicious elements to their Councilors, Local Government Chairmen or other relevant authorities for government’s immediate intervention.

Leader of the delegation and Chairman of Mbaitoli Council of Village Heads, Ichie Peter Oparadike praised the Deputy Governor for her exemplary loyalty to the governor, while expressing their gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodimma, who he described as “the Governor General of the South East”, for the choice of Mbaitoli daughter and wife as his Deputy.

He disclosed that Village Heads are traditional Chiefs, chosen by the village and confirmed by the traditional ruler, mostly from the most senior clan in the village. He added that the village heads work with the traditional rulers, in most cases serving as members of the Eze’s cabinet, describing it as a lifetime position.
