Gov Mbah commissions 5 ultramodern transport terminals, 100 mass transit CNG buses in Enugu

blank

In a major move that revolutionalises transportation in Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah, on Thursday, inaugurated five ultramodern transport terminals in various parts of the state in line with his integrated blueprint for a modern and multimodal transport ecosystem.

Mbah also launched 100 out of the 200 CNG Mass Transit buses acquired by the administration, the Enugu State Modern Transport System as well as over 80 modern bus shelters constructed across the state.

The terminals visited and personally commissioned were the Holy Ghost Terminal 1 (Enugu Central Station 1), designated for interstate transport; Holy Ghost Terminal 2 (Enugu Central Station 2) for intercity transport; Nsukka Terminal (Nsukka Central Station); Abakpa Nike Terminal (Abakpa Central Station), and Gariki Terminal (Gariki Central Station).

Mbah said the projects, which drew huge crowds and elicited palpable joy among the residents, was a key part of the administration’s integrated five-terminal Transport Infrastructure Project, Phase 1, in line with his vision to grow the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

Addressing a mammoth crowd at the Holy Ghost Terminal 2, the governor recalled that until the commencement of the project in late 2023, the Holy Ghost area was “practically a synonym for chaotic traffic and general disorderliness.”

Continuing, he said, “Aside from the fact it constituted a major municipal blight, we knew we could not attain our audacious economic goals if we lacked an efficient public transport system that offered both comfort and dignity.

“We knew that our goal to make Enugu the most livable city in Nigeria will be a futile bid, if we were unable to tackle problems such as persistent traffic gridlock.

“So, from the very first day of this administration, we made a promise: to build a world-class transport system that moves people, connects businesses and communities, and, crucially, that rightfully positions Enugu State as a model of modern governance, sustainable growth, and human dignity.

“Today’s commissioning of the newly completed world-class terminals and the CNG Bus Mass Transit Scheme is indeed, beyond a ribbon-cutting exercise. It ushers in a whole new experience; fundamentally connecting our vision to action, and our action to the daily lives of the over seven million residents of Enugu State.”

He explained that alongside the CNG Rapid Bus Service (Mass Transit Scheme), the terminals were “central pillars of our transport agenda – a multimodal highway to the future – integrating road, rail, air, and waterways into one seamless, safe, and efficient ecosystem.”

He also described the terminals as catalysts for economic development and “engines of economic revival.”

“They represent our capacity to deliver projects that empower Ndi Enugu and set our state on a robust trajectory of growth.

“Already, this project is creating jobs, stimulating SMEs, and positioning Enugu to compete with Africa’s best. Through it, we’re creating over 20,000 jobs across BRT, 2,000 hybrid city taxis, airport operations, ride-hailing and support services.”

He said that the Enugu Transport Management system would eliminate corruption that had been the bane of government enterprises to ensure sustainability, counting on an e-ticketing system that eliminates leakages, guarantees transparency, and ensures every payment is accounted for.

“Commuters simply need to purchase a ticket and top-up as they find suitable. Remarkably, a single valid ticket grants the holder access to other buses. Importantly, our comprehensive insurance coverage protects both the assets and the people who use them,” he stated.

Mbah thanked President Bola Tinubu for his committed to the state’s development

“Through words and deeds, the President has demonstrated a sincere love and support towards Enugu – and indeed the South East’s progress. An example is the concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, which would clearly re-position Enugu as an aviation and economic hub.

â€So, we commend the President because no administration has given as much support to the sub-nationals as this President has done, he concluded.

In his goodwill message, the Programme Director/CEO of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, who was represented by Engr. Tari Mayor-Bright, commended Governor Mbah for the ultramodern terminal and massive deployment of CNG buses.

“This this is not just infrastructure, but a bold step in setting up a modern transportation system geared towards a cleaner, safer and more affordable transport for the people of Enugu State,” he stated.

Also, the Managing Director of contractors, Planet Project Construction Company, Biodun Otunola, said that building five terminals simultaneously was unprecedented.

“No administration has ever done this before since the history of Nigeria. We are in this industry and we have the records,” he stated.

He described the terminals as products of a good research and political will of the governor to get things done.

Speaking at the various locations, the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor; Council Chairman of Enugu North LGA, Dr. Ibenaku Onoh; Chairman of Nsukka LGA, Engr. Jude Asogwa; Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Samuel Asadu; Chairman, Ogige Market Traders Association, Hon. Onyema Idoko; President, Nsukka General Assembly, Clinton Ogbonna; Chairman, Enugu East LGA, Beloved Dan-Anike; Traditional Ruler of Nike, Igwe Julius Nnaji; Chairman, Enugu South LGA, Hon. Caleb Ani and the Chairman, Enugu South Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Mike Nna Ukwu, expressed the people’s joy over the projects and buses, describing them as economic catalysts.

Origin of Iri Ji Mbaise by Eric Agwamba

blank

“Iri ji Mbaise”

” The origin and evolution was handed to us by oral tradition”.

1946 was the exact date when this festival started. Though, the celebration now is fixed on the 15th of August of every year . The cradle of creation took place in Ezinihitte Mbaise at “Orie-ukwu” a boundary between Oboama na Umunama with the birth of five clans-EZINIHITTE, OKE-OVORO, AGBAJA, AHIARA AND EKWEREAZU.

In those ancient days, the celebration of annual Iriji took place in every village and town in Mbaise on an important market day of the week. Then, you have something like –Iri ji ORIE-UKWU, EKE-UKWU, AFO-UKWU, OR NKWO-UKWU. Just as we now celebrate the Christmas on market days between many towns in Mbaise, which we fondly called “ERIGWARA” The cultivation and planting of farm crops between January to end of May resulted in shortage of food. Families would feed on little available food. This famine period would continue through the end of July when the first species of yam called “Ji-Igwe” would be harvested. This particular specie of yam is nicknamed “cut and come again” because when you dig and cut off the early tuber leaving the head underground (ike-ji), it will grow and produce another tuber which will be planted in the next cropping season. The fathers of the Households in the villages and towns would be very happy and thankful to God for having survived the famine. To them, this wonder of nature calls for celebration hence a day was set aside for the celebration named “Iriji-Ohuo”-New yam Festival. Celebrate the harvest Festival. Therefore, the festival of the new yam is a thanksgiving celebration. If it is a true then that there are as many minds as there are heads, then there are as many kinds of cultures as there are beliefs. Culture is people’s total way of life. “IRI JI MBAISE” is our cultural heritage handed down from generation to generation. Celebrate & enjoy it..

To all my MBAISE brothers and sisters all over the world

I wish you all HAPPY IRI JI FESTIVAL…

After a thorough deliberation on the current political climate, the Coalition hereby resolves as follows:

*RESOLUTIONS:*

1. That the Coalition notes with utter consternation and total disapproval the incessant, sponsored, and coordinated media attacks targeted at the personality of Rt. Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha (Nwanyi Wu Ihe), the esteemed Member representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives.

2. That the Coalition vehemently condemns these baseless attacks in the strongest possible terms, describing them as malicious propaganda, designed by retrogressive forces whose only agenda is to distract the lawmaker from her laudable service to the people.

3. That the Coalition expresses immense pride and satisfaction in the unprecedented achievements of Rt. Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha, whose representation has become a shining example of what effective, visionary, and people-oriented leadership should be. We commend her for:

The establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Okigwe, a historic feat that has put Okigwe Zone on the national healthcare map.

Facilitation of federal jobs for numerous youths of Okigwe North, given out based on merit and not as commodities for sale.

The Bill for the establishment of the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Isiala Mbano LGA, to address the acute shortage of trained healthcare professionals.

The Bill for the establishment of the Federal College of Horticulture, Okigwe LGA, aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural and economic landscape of the zone.

Attraction and execution of numerous road rehabilitation projects across the three LGAs, thereby improving connectivity and economic activities.

Provision of solar-powered streetlights and boreholes in communities, addressing the lingering issues of rural electrification and access to clean water.

Distribution of school desks, uniforms, footwear, and learning materials to countless school children, promoting educational access and reducing the burden on parents.

Renovation and rebuilding of abandoned and dilapidated schools, transforming them into conducive learning environments.

Ongoing youth and women empowerment schemes, capacity-building programs, and poverty-alleviation initiatives.

4. We challenge these disgruntled elements who are deliberately heating up the polity in Okigwe North Federal Constituency to point out any predecessor of Rt. Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha who has matched even a quarter of her remarkable achievements since her assumption of office. We dare them to face the facts and stop peddling falsehood.

5. That the Coalition wishes to make it unequivocally clear that the Zoning currently ongoing in Okigwe North should not be truncated, Nothing that Onuimo had their time from 1999 to 2007, Okigwe Had their time from 2007 to 2015, Isiala mbano time started in 2015 to 2023 which ended the first phase of representation in Okigwe North, in 2023, the second phase of the entrenched 8-year zoning arrangement of Okigwe North Federal Constituency, rightfully started with Isiala Mbano LGA, which will end in 2031.

6. The coalition Stated That any attempt to project a contrary zoning arrangement at this critical phase is nothing short of a desperate ploy to disrupt the peaceful, inclusive, and most effective rotational arrangement that has fostered unity and fairness among the three LGAs of Okigwe North.

7. That the Coalition wishes to remind all that Rt. Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha’s ranking status at the National Assembly is an invaluable asset to Okigwe North Federal Constituency.

8. We declare without ambiguity that we shall not fold our arms and watch selfish and self-centered individuals continue to perpetuate falsehood, blackmail, and spurious information against one of our very own, a woman who has redefined female leadership and made women of Okigwe Zone and Imo State proud in all ramifications.

9. That the Coalition firmly affirms our total, unwavering, and unflinching support for Rt. Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha (Nwanyi Wu Ihe). We call on well-meaning sons and daughters of Okigwe North to unite, rally behind her, and protect the legacy of transformational representation she has built, which remains the pride of our constituency.

10. That the Coalition calls on the sponsors of these divisive media attacks to desist immediately, as their actions only serve to expose their political bankruptcy and desperation. Progress, not propaganda, is what Okigwe North Federal Constituency deserves. God bless Okigwe North

Bode George reacts over news that Jonathan is planning to contest 2027 presidency election under PDP

blank

A trusted confidant of former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has allegedly told The Vanguard that the Bayelsa-born statesman is set to be a major opponent to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

blank

As per the report, the associate—who is also affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—disclosed that efforts to field Jonathan as the PDP’s flagbearer had progressed significantly and that the former president had already accepted the proposal.

Commenting on the development a day earlier, Chief Olabode George, ex-Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, remarked that Jonathan was more than qualified to run under the PDP banner.

In his reaction, he noted that Jonathan’s leadership record could make him a popular candidate among Nigerians.

“He’s extremely qualified because he remained loyal to the party. The more choices we have, the better. Others who wish to contest should wait until 2035.

Jonathan is the easiest to market due to his track record, particularly the economic stability seen during his administration,” George stated.

Addressing concerns over whether Jonathan’s two previous oaths of office could hinder his eligibility, George clarified that it would not.

He explained that Jonathan’s first swearing-in occurred after the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, and was carried out under the Doctrine of Necessity. At the time, Jonathan had not contested an election but merely completed Yar’Adua’s term.

Education minister dismisses allegations against UBEC boss, Aisha Garba

The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has denounced allegations of administrative misconduct against the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba.

Alausa, in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, on Tuesday, said the claims peddled by a faceless group identifying itself as the “Education Rights Activists Coalition (ERAC)” were false and untrue.

“The Federal Ministry of Education has noted with concern recent media publications containing baseless, sponsored, and libellous allegations against the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Hajia Aisha Garba.

“These claims—peddled by a faceless group identifying itself as the â€Education Rights Activists Coalition (ERAC)’—are entirely without merit and appear to be the handiwork of subversive elements threatened by the bold reforms currently underway in the basic education sector,” the statement noted.

Alausa in his official statement categorically refuted the reports, describing them as baseless, sponsored, and completely untrue.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s full confidence in Dr. Garba’s leadership and condemned the false narrative as an attempt to derail the positive reforms being implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Ordinarily, the Ministry would not dignify such falsehoods with a response. However, allowing these fabrications to fester unchallenged could mislead the public and undermine the progress being made.

“The accusations of administrative misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of procedure are not only false but clearly part of a calculated smear campaign targeted at discrediting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“Since her appointment, Hajia Aisha Garba—a seasoned education expert with over 24 years of global experience, including 15 years at the World Bank—has demonstrated exemplary leadership and accountability in repositioning UBEC as a transformative institution.

“Under her leadership, UBEC has transitioned from merely disbursing grants to driving systemic reforms focused on quality, equity, financing, and institutional strengthening,” the Minister stated.

Notable achievements of Garba, according to the statement, include the construction of 4,951 new classrooms, renovation of 3,070 classrooms, establishment of Early Childhood Care Development and Education (ECCDE) centres, provision of 353,625 furniture units, and distribution of over 5 million textbooks.

The Ministry further disclosed that UBEC has also trained more than 147,000 teachers and revised the Minimum Basic Education Standards to promote safer and more inclusive learning environments nationwide.

“Additionally, the Commission launched Nigeria’s largest-ever teacher professional development programme, reaching nearly 978,800 teachers. In partnership with the NERDC, UBEC initiated a curriculum reform to embed digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and critical thinking in the basic education system.

“On financing, Hajia Garba led reforms to the Basic Education Action Plan (BEAP) and Matching Grant formula, introducing results-based planning, flexible funding for state-specific needs, and dedicated budget lines for EMIS, teacher training, digital tools, and teaching materials.

“These innovations, combined with high-level advocacy, have led to ₦78.6 billion out of the ₦120 billion UBE intervention fund for 2024 being accessed by 28 states and the FCT.

“UBEC, under her leadership, has also deepened collaborations with critical stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Education, State Ministries of Education, State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, and international development partners such as the World Bank (HOPE-Edu and BESDA-AF), UNICEF, KOICA, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), all working together to improve access, quality, and equity in Nigeria’s basic education system.

“Furthermore, the School-Based Management Committee–School Improvement Programme (SBMC-SIP) has supported over 15,000 local projects, promoting grassroots participation and accountability in education delivery.

“In light of these undeniable strides, the Ministry reaffirms its full confidence in Aisha Garba’s leadership and commends her unwavering focus on transparency, inclusion, and excellence.

“We urge her and the UBEC team to remain resolute and undistracted in their mandate to deliver quality, safe, and globally competitive education for every Nigerian child,” the statement added.

Obi Insists – Four Years Enough to Turn Nigeria Around

blank

Peter Obi, has argued that he is ready to run for a single tenure as President of Nigeria, stressing that within the years in power he is optimistic of transforming the country.

According to the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate;

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation. By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months”, Obi said.

The Labour Party stalwart dismissed suggestions that his stance was borne out of desperation or lack of ambition, emphasising that his motivation has always been service, not power.

“I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter,” he said.

“There are some traits associated with desperation, which in no way are in any of my political behaviours in the past and now—like engaging in overly aggressive rhetoric or actions to prove a point, becoming overly defensive to criticism, making unrealistic promises, or resorting to personal attacks against opponents.”

Obi challenged critics to scrutinise his political record, stating that he has never been associated with electoral malpractice.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice. I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility” he said.

He also pointed to his past contests as evidence of his commitment to fairness, saying, “Ask those who have contested against me—none were ever denied their rights, framed, or falsely accused. None was asked to place their advert materials or break the bank to do so. I believe in fair competition, not manufactured victories.”

Obi argued that with disciplined leadership, Nigeria could redirect wasteful spending into critical sectors within four years.

“In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas,” he said. “For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure.”

He added that within the same period, his administration would ensure the rule of law is sacrosanct and that elections are free and fair.

“Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service,” Obi said. “If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”

His remarks come amid ongoing debates about governance efficiency in Nigeria, with many critics arguing that systemic corruption and poor policy implementation have hindered development despite decades of leadership changes.

Obi’s insistence on a single-term focus has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising his commitment to accountability while others saying it is borne out of desperation, questioning whether four years is enough to address Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges.

Obi, however, remains optimistic, maintaining that with the right priorities, Nigeria’s decline can be reversed in a short time.

“What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep commitment to see Nigeria work,” he said. “And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it.”

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, Obi’s message continues to resonate with a segment of the electorate disillusioned with prolonged political tenures that yield little change. Whether his proposition gains wider acceptance remains to be seen, but his insistence on term limits and efficiency has undoubtedly stirred a fresh conversation about Nigeria’s leadership future.

You’re either with ADC or not – David Mark warns coalition members

The interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has warned members that the party will not accept any anti-party activities or indiscipline.

Mark said only committed ADC members would be carried along in the scheme of things under his leadership.

The former Senate President disclosed this while addressing some ADC members in Abuja.

According to Mark: “There will be zero tolerance for anti-party and any form of indiscipline; you are either in ADC or not in ADC.

“No mid-way in this business and those not with us, we will not carry them along.

“Those who are not totally committed will not be carried along.

“We shall reverse our grassroot leadership structures to reflect modern realities from the polling units upwards to the national level. Every organ reenergised.

“We will open the gates for the next generations, our policies, nominations and roles will reflect such.”

The ADC, which was recently adopted by the opposition coalition, has some eminent Nigerians who are yet to officially defect to the party.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who is a key member of the coalition, has yet to officially defect to ADC.

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has yet to officially join the party despite being a key member of the coalition.

Use your platform to project Nigeria’s unity-Tinubu to New Media Influencers

blank

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday called on young Nigerians active in the digital media space to harness their platforms as instruments of national progress.

He urged them to build businesses that create employment, produce content that reflects unifying values, and serve as positive catalysts for societal development. He emphasised the critical importance of verifying information before amplifying it.

At the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” President Tinubu said:

“Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility.

“I urge you to continue using digital platforms to advance our nation’s progress. Build businesses that employ others. Create content that uplifts and unites. Use your influence to foster unity, not division.”

He commended the creativity and resilience of Nigeria’s youth as he described digital media as a driving force of economic and social transformation.

It is no longer merely an accessory to life, he said.

“From developing innovative platforms to building vibrant online communities, you are demonstrating the determination that is redefining what is possible for this country.

“You are not waiting for the future; you are building it. Digital media is now a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change. It broadens representation for those previously unheard.”

The President said his administration is committed to supporting digital innovation through the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies that promote a thriving startup ecosystem. However, he warned practitioners to remain vigilant against disinformation and cyber threats.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, praised digital media practitioners who have consistently stood up for Nigeria and projected the nation positively on the global stage:

“You are the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria, determined to reach for the stars. Under President Tinubu’s leadership, our nation has begun its long-delayed march toward greatness. The road may be challenging, but it is necessary,” he stated.

In a goodwill message, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the significance of the Summit. He noted that lessons from recent elections in countries like the U.S. and Germany underscore how digital media have become crucial battlegrounds—beyond mere entertainment—for shaping poll outcomes.

“However, social media is not a fair battleground. As a public square, it is often chaotic and unregulated. Users frequently disregard rules. Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents. Posts are driven by clicks, not truth or accuracy. Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections.” Onanuga observed.

He expressed optimism that the Summit would address these challenges, focusing on strategies to combat fake news and misinformation.

The summit convener, Segun Dada, Special Assistant to the President on New Media, emphasised that in less than a decade, digital media has evolved from a tool of personal connection into a powerful engine for communication, innovation, and influence.

He stressed the importance of harnessing this force for the good of Nigeria while managing inherent risks such as privacy concerns and threats to social cohesion.

The group expressed this appreciation during their visit to Owerri, the Imo State capital, ahead of the South East Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, holding today in Owerri, for Abia and Imo States.

I’ll resign as FCT Minister if Amaechi is not indicted after a forensic audit – Wike

blank

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has urged President Bola Tinubu to release the forensic audit report on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which he claims implicates former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

Wike vowed to resign from his position if the report is made public and does not indict Amaechi.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Friday, July 4,in Abuja, Wike responded to corruption allegations leveled against him by Amaechi. He alleged that Amaechi’s wife received N4 billion monthly from the NDDC to train Niger Delta women.

“Amaechi’s wife was never an industrialist. That’s why I call on Mr. President to release the forensic audit of the NDDC,” Wike said.

“Her company received N4 billion every month to train Niger Delta women—that’s N48 billion in one year alone. The forensic audit report is there. Who buried it? Malami, the former Attorney General.

“I plead with Mr. President to help Nigerians by releasing that document. If the report does not confirm what I’ve said, I will resign as Minister of the FCT. I don’t worship office.”

Wike added that he was not declaring the audit infallible but insisted it should be made public. “Let Nigerians see the report. That is how Amaechi’s wife became an industrialist—N4 billion every month,” he said.

The FCT minister also questioned Amaechi’s academic credentials, calling them below average. He dismissed Amaechi’s claim that a senator gave him a Rolls-Royce that he does not use, alleging instead that the luxury car came from a contractor handling nearly 90% of projects in Rivers State while Amaechi was governor.
