… As Power Commissioner Promises Affordable Energy

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring universal energy access for residents of the state. He made this known during the 2025 World Energy Day celebration held on Wednesday at the Golden Vista Hotel, Owerri. The event was organized by the Ministries of Power and Electrification, and Petroleum and Natural Gas Development.

Represented by his Deputy, Lady Dr. Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, the Governor said energy remains a critical driver of sustainable development, economic growth, and social well-being. He called on stakeholders to strengthen their contributions toward achieving quality, affordable, and reliable energy supply in Imo State.

Governor Uzodimma noted that his administration, under the Shared Prosperity agenda, has made bold strides in improving the state’s energy infrastructure. He listed key initiatives such as the establishment of the Orashi Electricity Company, rehabilitation and expansion of distribution networks, and partnerships with private investors to develop renewable energy projects.

 

He added that these efforts have improved power availability, boosted local industries, and enhanced household welfare. The Governor pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to sustain and expand power initiatives that will lead to a more prosperous and resilient Imo State.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Power and Electrification, Engr. Nwabueze Oguchienti, described the theme of this year’s celebration, “Empowering the Future: Sustainable Energy for All,” as a call to envision an Imo where clean and affordable electricity is accessible to every home, school, and business. He commended Governor Uzodimma for enacting the Imo State Electricity Reform Law, which led to the creation of the Imo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ISERC).

 

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Gas Development, Hon. Emeka Mgbudem, said Imo State is poised to become the cheapest industrial hub in Africa due to its abundant gas reserves. The event was attended by top government officials, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
