The Senate and the National Universities Commission have emphasized the need for the establishment of more universities in Nigeria to address the rising demand for tertiary education.

This call was made on Monday in Abuja during a public hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, where stakeholders supported the proposed establishment of the Federal University, Okigwe, in Imo State.

Speaking at the hearing, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Senator Muntari Dandutse; the sponsor of the Federal University Okigwe Bill, Senator Patrick Ndubueze; and the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Mr. Chris Maiyaki, all underscored the urgent need for more universities in Nigeria.

Maiyaki highlighted the dire shortfall in Nigeria’s higher education infrastructure.

He noted, “There are 275 universities, both public and private, available for over two million prospective students seeking admission annually.

“The implication is that on a yearly basis, only 500,000 to 700,000 students are admitted, leaving about 1.3 million frustrated and unable to pursue university education.”

He further compared Nigeria’s situation to other nations, stating, “Nigeria, with a population of 200 million, has only 275 universities.

In contrast, Indonesia, which has a similar population, boasts about 2,000 universities, while countries like Russia, Brazil, and India have hundreds of thousands of higher institutions.”

To address this gap, Maiyaki assured stakeholders that the NUC was working on expanding regulatory frameworks and enhancing capacity building to support the establishment of additional universities.

Senator Dandutse also pointed out the potential impact of the proposed Federal University, Okigwe.

According to him, it would “significantly improve access to university education for Nigerians, particularly those in Imo State, while contributing to national educational development.”

Similarly, Senator Ndubueze stressed the transformative potential of the institution for Okigwe, noting that the town had long been deprived of federal presence.

“Okigwe remains the only province from the past era without federal recognition or a state capital status,” he remarked.

The Traditional ruler of Ihim community and Deputy Chairman Imo Council of Traditional rulers, HRM Eze Oliver Ohanweh, was present alongside other traditional rulers from Okigwe zone, and they all expressed their happiness over the development and poured encomiums on the Senator representing Imo North.

Breaking: Rochas Okorocha hale and hearty, says Aide

……….PRESS RELEASE….

By Iheanyi Enwerem

In a swift reply to rumours making waves about the health of former Governor of Imo State, and Senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, Mr. Sam Onwuemedo says his boss is in good health.

In a press release made available to IKORO OKIGWE on Thursday morning it read;

1. On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, a group of people, came up with what they had described as “breaking news”. And what was that ” breaking news?”. That, the former Governor of lmo State and former Senator Representing lmo West Senatorial District, His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha had fallen sick and taken to London hospital where he died. And what was the sickness? They said, it was” Acute gorilla”.

2. To all men and women of conscience and good tidings, the correct breaking news is that, Rochas Okorocha was neither sick, nor dead. Okorocha has never had even headache since he left as the Governor of lmo State in 2019. In other words, Rochas Okorocha is hale and hearty as we write.

3. Okorocha had spent almost one week in Owerri for the burial of Chief Emmanuel lwuanyanwu. On the burial day, Friday, November 1, 2024, he was at the burial Church Service and was present at the burial site.

4. After the burial, he went to his Owerri to residence to receive and host Nigerians from all walks of life who had come for the burial. He hosted them, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon.Benjamine kalu and many of his Colleagues.

5. Okorocha was in his Owerri residence receiving visitors from far and near, until Monday, November 4, when he went back to Abuja with some other guests for the the Night of Tributes at Yardua Center for another great Nigerian and illustrious son of lgboland, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu. On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, he was at the Service of Songs, equally in honour of Ogbonnaya Onu.

6. Twenty four hours after, the ugly breaking news came up. We know those behind the unfortunate breaking news. We equally know their motive. We know their problem . And they have our sympathies.

7. It’s very disturbing, that, at a time like this, what some people could come up with as their own version of breaking news was to ” allocate” “acute gorilla” they had, perhaps, invented, to someone who didn’t have fever. And equally pronounced the person dead, when the person is alive. Hale and hearty.

8. Those behind this evil breaking news need our collective prayers and heartfelt condolences. They’re dead in Spirit. They need spiritual rearmament. They need atonement. It takes the evil ones to know the latest disease or infection in the atmosphere or in town. Evil ones take stock of diseases. That’s their stock in trade.

9. Those behind this alarming breaking news were angry because of the resounding ovation that had followed the introduction of Okorocha at lwuanyanwu’s burial. You do not curse who GOD, in his infinite Mercy and wisdom, has blessed. You do not declare dead, someone GOD has kept alive.

10. The Scripture says, “tell the wicked, it shall not be well with them”. But we won’t do this. Rather, we tell those behind this unimaginable breaking news that, it shall be well with them. We do not belong to their group. We do things differently. We are not the ones to judge them. God has the final say. We leave them to their consciences if they have any.

11. To thousands of people, both within and outside, who had directly called Owelle or called those close to the former lmo governor to ascertain the authenticity or otherwise of the nauseating breaking news, we say, thank you. We thank you immensely. All things worketh together for good, to them that love God.

Finally, we continue to pray for these couriers or distributors of “acute gorilla”, until they have genuine repentance and begin to live normal life. Those who live normal life do not wish people dead. We annoint them with fresh oil for genuine repentance. May the GOOD LORD meet them at the point of their need. We sympathize with them.

News

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called on the Nigerian diaspora community to contribute to the country’s development, stressing the need for quality governance and leadership.

Speaking at the inaugural launch of the Igbo Lawyers Association of South Africa in Johannesburg, Governor Otti noted that Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges have led to a mass migration of professionals, resulting in a brain drain.

This was made known through a statement made available to STANDARD TIMES NIGERIA by the SSA to the governor on Public Affairs, Dr. Ebere Uzoukwa.

Nigeria’s unpleasant socio-economic realities, including a steep decline in the value of the naira, sky-high inflation rates, insecurity, and consistent questions over the country’s political trajectory, have forced many talented professionals to seek greener pastures abroad.

Governor Otti acknowledged the difficulties faced by Nigerians abroad, emphasizing that migration is not an easy choice, but sometimes necessary.

He dispelled stereotypes that Nigerians living abroad are less inclined to abide by laws and conventions of their host countries. Instead, he highlighted the value Nigerians bring to their host countries through innovative spirit, energy, and dedication.

Governor Otti cited examples of accomplished Nigerians in various professional fields, breaking barriers and raising stakes on multiple frontiers of human interests.

The governor emphasized the need to reset leadership selection and administrative processes to support the dreams of Nigerian citizens. He encouraged the diaspora community to go beyond philanthropy and directly influence public sector leadership by participating in the political process and engaging with elected officials. This includes sensitizing people on what to look out for when choosing candidates in electoral contests.

He thanked the diaspora community for their support in his 2023 election victory, acknowledging their significant contributions. He invited them to participate in his monthly interactive sessions with the media and Abians, sharing ideas and asking questions on development challenges and strategies.

Despite disappointments with Nigeria’s democracy, Governor Otti urged resilience, emphasizing that there is no alternative to democracy. He encouraged the diaspora community to visit Abia State and explore investment opportunities, particularly in agriculture, ICT, and technology-driven manufacturing.

Governor Otti’s call to action emphasizes the critical role of the diaspora community in shaping Nigeria’s future. By contributing to quality governance and leadership, Nigerians abroad can help build a better, safer, and more prosperous country for all.

Acting President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Bayelsa, Chief Remigius Ekwem, has urged Gov. Duoye Diri to call his Commissioner for Special Duties, Mazi Johnson Onuma, to order over a leadership tussle in the state.

Ekwem made the call in a release which he signed and made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Monday.

Ekwem decried Onuma’s involvement in a physical fight which left Chief Johnpaul Nwankwo, the Enugu state President of Ohanaeze in Bayelsa “badly injured amd hospitalised “.

He wondered why Onuma, who hails from Abia and serves as a commissioner in Bayelsa, would be embroiled in a dispute over who becomes Igwe Ndigbo of Bayelsa.

He argued that the position of Igwe Ndigbo was “open to contest and will be occupied by an elected official “, hence the need for due process.

He warned that any attempt to foist a candidate on the association will be legally and duly resisted.

According to him, the position can also be zoned considering the states of origin of officials currently occupying other positions in Ohanaeze Ndigbo Bayelsa.

He described the commissioner’s recent actions as “an embarrassment to the Bayelsa state government “ and urged the governor to call Onuma to order to avert further damage.

“Abia State is holding the office of the president, women leader, youth leader and now he wants to install another Abia person as the Igwe, a candidate who has not spent up to two years in Ohanaeze and is therefore not eligible to contest.

“If he had even supported a candidate known by Igbos in Bayelsa, we would have all supported him, so that he can contest with Chief Ozuome from Enugu so that anyone who wins will be installed.

“ We therefore call on Governor Douye Diri to call his commissioner to order before more harm is done “, he said.

Ekwem however said that Nwankwo, who is recuperating in an hospital is in a stable condition.

Breaking:Imo Govt alerts public over cloned story against Uzodimma

blank

Imo state government has condemned the resurrection of a cloned fake THISDAY story against Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba regretted that those who are bent on stoking conflict between Ndigbo and the rest of the country were behind the re circulation of the cloned newspaper publication where it was alleged that Gov Hope Uzodimma has pledged to marry off Imo women to Fulani settlers.

He said the cloned Thisday publication first circulated in August 2021, which was promptly disowned by the management of the newspaper.

Emelumba disclosed that the resurrection of the fake news story has been traced to the same group raising a false alarm that Imo state was hosting an IDP Camp at Nsu,Ehime Mbano local government area of the state.

He named the sponsors as those who woefully lost the recently conducted local government election and were looking for ways to cause instability in the state.

Emelumba said it was ungodly for people out of sheer political banditry to resurrect an issue that had been settled three years ago.

According to him, Uzodimma doesn’t even have the power to compel any lady outside his biological children to marry anyone, and he wondered where they got that satanic idea from.

He said it was ridiculous for people to peddle such a rumour again ,even when they know that there is no iota of truth in it.

” Honestly, I believe Imo people are too cosmopolitan to believe such a balderdash from empty brains whose quest for power has led them to all sorts of mischief and desperation”, he submitted.

He described Uzodimma as an unrepentant democrat who will never trample upon the human rights of any law-abiding resident of the state.

The commissioner called on the people of Imo State to disregard any information that is intended to tarnish the image of government officials or incite them against other Nigerians.

According to him, the resurrection of the fake news against the governor and the circulation of a video by one Chinonso Uba calling for insurrection against the federal government by Ndigbo was not a mere coincidence.

He noted that it was a deliberate action to cause instability in Imo state, leading to another wave of insecurity in the state

No plans to settle IDP refugees in Ehime Mbano -Sen. Ibezim

Says false information coming from enemies of Okigwe zone

Immediate past Senator representing Imo North at the Senate of the National Assembly, Senator Frank Ibezim, has refuted the rumour  making waves in the media that there is ongoing plans by Federal Government of Nigeria to settle Internally Displaced Persons, refugees and migrants at National Open University of Nigeria,(Noun) Nsu in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

In a press release from Senator Ibezim and made available to IKORO OKIGWE, on Monday, September,30,2024.

It read;

My dear brethren,

I am compelled by our joint sense of purpose and commitment to address some misinformation arising from the TVC news coverage of my recent visit to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Nsu Study Centre.

I was accompanied by the Federal Commissioner for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

First, I must clarify that the video of refugees attached to the TVC broadcast, which has caused understandable anxiety, was not filmed in Imo State. The insinuation that there is intent to settle IDPs, refugees, or migrant persons at the NOUN Nsu Centre is entirely false.

As a responsible stakeholder, when I see an opportunity for our community, I must act. Obviously, there are mischief-makers who aim to distort my genuine intentions. So, for the purpose of clarity, let me set the record straight as follows:

1. NOUN Nsu is a federal, multi-disciplinary educational institution, open to qualified applicants from across Nigeria and beyond, just like all other federal institutions in the country.

2. The facilities at NOUN Nsu are already in use, with over 200 students enrolled since its commencement in October 2023, and further intake is ongoing.

3. Our visit was for two federal agencies to assess these facilities to determine if they could be used for training in specialized skills, following our request to utilize the already built incubation center.

4. This is the third agency of government (Michael Okpara University and the Biotechnology Agency, prior), to undertake this assessment and adaptability visit for the purpose of evaluating the facilities for training.

5. We believe that if the training facilities meet their requirements, we would be pleased to have these agencies collaborate with NOUN Nsu to train qualifying candidates.

6. While it is understandable that the visiting agency’s name includes “refugees,” this does not encompass their full mandate. They also work to equip communities with necessary skills through integrative programs.

7. The agency is not seeking to resettle or relocate any refugees. They aim to use the existing facilities to train eligible individuals from time to time.

8. As I stated in the NTA News coverage, it is crucial for the government to focus on utilizing existing government infrastructure completed in the last administration instead of constructing new ones, especially in the face of scarce resources and the hardships faced by our citizens.

9. For emphasis, I must restate that there are no plans to settle IDPs, Refugees or Migrant persons at the National Open University Centre, Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA. Any such claim is categorically false. I will never be part of such a plan. The plan is for skills training for our vulnerable young people from the South East

In conclusion, as I have always said, all well-meaning citizens should put hands on deck in the efforts to synergise with the government to facilitate human development, progress and opportunities for our teeming youth population and the less privileged.

Thank you and God bless you.

Senator Frank Ibezim, KSC

Hardship: Sanwo-Olu okays work-from-home for workers

blank

Lagos correspondentÂ

Lagos State Government has extended its work-from-home policy for its workers for the next three months.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the extension in a circular signed by the state Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro, on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that, on February 28, the governor directed that the workers would work remotely on some days.

He directed that workers on Grade Levels 01 to 14 were allowed to work from home for two days in a week, while those on Grade Level 15 to 17 were allowed to work from home for one day in a week.

The decision was aimed at reducing the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy on the workers

Sanwo-Olu stated in the Wednesday’s circular that the policy made positive impacts on workers’ productivity in the various ministries, departments and agencies of the state government.

NAN reports that the extension took effect from September 4.

In February, the governor explained that the initiative was to cushion the effect of the prevailing harsh economy on workers.

“As a government, we cannot be everything and everywhere but we can provide and create avenues for others to join us. The first we have done or will be doing from today going forward is that we want to start with our public servants. Even the challenge that we see now, can we be creative and have flexible working hours?

“So immediately from next week, we are working out the plans where civil servants from levels one to 14 will come to the office a maximum of three times a week. Not that any form of government will be shut down, it will all be calendarised and it will be on schedule. Levels 15 to 17 will miss work a day,” he said.
